My first random thought.

I noticed a drop in traffic today. I met up with a friend at the beach that had just driven down from central Ca. And drove right through L.A. And he said the same thing. So I think this impact is larger then we may think. But I liked that the roads were more open.

Here is my thought

Whenever there is great change there is great opportunity. What types of business might do well if people want to drive less?

The right answer to that question could make you wealthy.

Bike shops should be doing a booming business about now. Especially in areas that already have good bike lanes and trails.

Funny you should ask that question. I work for a vendor that sells clothing to mass retailers (well, all retailers but mass is where the action is). Our 3 largest accounts are (probably obviously) WalMart, KMart, and Target.

We were joking the other day that as the economy worsens Target shoppers will go to WalMart and WalMart shoppers will go to KMart. We figured that existing KMart shoppers aren't impacted much by the cost of gas because most of the people who shop at a KMart do so because it's in walking distance .

If that theory sounds plausible, buy some stock in Sears Holdings (KMart parent). It should be a bargain these days since they've been on the decline for years.

Anyhow, if people want to drive less I think short trips will actually increase while long trips will decline.

This would be a good time to be like, a movie theater owner or other local entertainment venue rather than say a regional or national tourism based business. US international tourist destinations might not suffer so much since our dollar is so weak.

I can't believe this is what I'm thinking about at nearly midnight on a Saturday. I need to get a life...

Thats like when the weather man says scattered showers. Of course they are. If they came down in one drop it could kill somebody.

Good one!...

I've always had a problem with "underwater"...

No...You're IN water...you're UNDER the "sea level" where water and air meet...

If you were UNDERwater, you'd be in an area that was dry with ALL of the water above you...not around you...

That only works when "the top" is defined...which it can be...
