Gay fan asks NFL team to end Kiss Cam 'joke'

Quote:

Kiss Cam usually gets some laughs at arenas and stadiums around the nation, as a camera locks in on a couple in the stands and encourages (shames?) them into lip-lock. But a long-time Jacksonville Jaguars fan noticed something on Kiss Cam that irked him. On Monday, he decided to do something about it.

If you've seen Kiss Cam, you know this trick: After a series of shots of men sitting next to women, Kiss Cam will sometimes frame a pair of players of the opposing team on the bench. Dave Uible, who is gay, saw this gag and didn't think it was funny.

"I think I saw it, maybe two years ago," Uible, 47, said by phone Tuesday. "Then I saw it this year. The thing is they have this section at Jags games for honorable kids. Some are definitely going to be gay. It gives a negative angle. I just don't think it's necessary. It just seems out of place to me."

"I am gay and I have a lot of gay and lesbian friends who are proud Jaguar season ticket holders. I'm not sure you are aware, but there is a video 'joke' called the Kiss Cam that plays at the games. Often, the bit goes like this: after showing several happy heterosexual couples kissing in the stands, the camera then pans to two opposing male players who are in close proximity and leaning toward each other insinuating that they may do the exact same (and ostensibly wrong) thing and kiss. Hilarious, right? No, and the message is clear. Jaguars are heterosexual and approved. The opponent is 'gay,' disapproved and the butt of a crude joke. Really, why is this even at an NFL game?

Sooo... it's okay for heteros, but not for homosexuals. Homosexual fans are actually ASKING to be discriminated against?

No, you're missing the point. It's the setup to the "joke" that's offensive.

hetero couple kissing.... awww
hetero couple kissing.... awww

In my opinion it has more to do with two people not WANTING to kiss. If they put the cam on me and a male friend of mine that I did not have a romantic relationship with, us kissing would be quite amusing. It would be a joke. And something we would laugh about afterwards. It wouldn't be offensive. Why would it be? And if the two men on the opposing team DID kiss on the kisscam, there would likely be cheering. I fail to see how any of this is negative.

Honestly I don't quite get the big deal. As River said it is more about two people not wanting to kiss versus "ewww gays! LAWL ". I have seen two people who weren't together (just two random people) kiss each other for ****s and giggles.

Honestly, I think its funnier that two guys are kissing who are on opposing teams vs just two guys. Besides, if you don't want to participate you can just wave it away...well...most of the time ;)

I'm gay and I don't give a **** if gays are offended. Being gay doesn't give you any entitlement to being a thin skinned little pansy.

Most people are not gay. Most people are heterosexual. If they went to a gay and lesbian event and showed two gay guys kiss and then two gay women kiss and then zoomed over to a gay man and gay women next to each other and made a joke about them kissing , as if them kissing was wrong, then that would be offensive.
