When I was in India for work for about 2 months, I learned as much Hindi as I could prior to my visit. (I had very little time to prepare, though) On the plane I was reading my Hindi book, listening to CDs. Only to get there and find out that Hindi was only one of dozens of languages frequently spoken there. But, at least I learned a few necessary words and phrases. And had I stayed there longer, I would have made it my top priority to become fluent in as many of the dialects as I could.

I brushed up on my spanish before going to stay in Mexico for several months too. It's just the polite and safe thing to do.

I mean, vacationing is one thing.. no, you can't learn the language of every country you visit for a few days or weeks. But if you're going to ****ing live somewhere - learn the goddamn language!
Well said!

The other thing that pisses me off is when they have full conversations in Spanish right in front of me, or when it is a conversation I am involved in. It is just rude and disrespectful.

Court proceedings should be in English only and if they need a translater then they PAY for it themselves.

not a simple silver bullet solution
and why does anyone care? if these signs and instructions are printed in 2 languages (1 less than most instruction manuals for an appliance) there must be a reason.
If you're here on a Visa, then before you are allowed to drive here, you should have to show enough proficiency in English to be able to understand basic signage. I don't care if you can't read a sign telling you that Exit 98 is two miles, but you'd better be able to understand "Yield to pedestrians".

I was at the local DMV on my lunch hour (I work in a town that's about 1/3 Hispanic) and the branch manager walked out and informed the four or five Hispanics sitting there that if they didn't speak English, then it was THIER responsibility to get an interpretter. He wasn't rude about it, but neither was he going to take any crap about it either.

Maybe you think I care one whit about those sorry foreigners who have a work visa, but cannot understand the language of their host country enough to get by. I don't.

.
I can't understand a word you Americans say anyway.

It is bad enough to hear some UK people speaking the Queen's English,
but you over there across the Pond have made English unrecognisable (yes, with an s, not a zee!).

Higgins means "hanged" instead of "hung", no? The former is for people. The latter is for things.
