Ad showing 'homosexual' newborn causes stir in Italy

Quote:
An ad campaign to counter discrimination against gays has stirred up passions in Italy, using a poster that shows a newborn with the word "homosexual" written on his wristband.
"Sexual orientation is not a choice," reads the slogan on the poster that was going up all across the central-northern Tuscany region and was published in national newspapers Wednesday.

"Using newborns to make people believe that homosexual impulses are an innate characteristic is dishonest and a disgrace," said Christian Democratic lawmaker Luca Volonte.

Gay philosopher Gianni Vattimo said the ad was in "bad taste" and that the slogan was "only partly true."

Italy's main gay rights association ArciGay, for its part, praised the initiative, saying homosexuality is an "unchangeable fact that should be respected."
Whether being a homosexual is choice, lifestyle, impulse, a combination, or whatever, this was definitely stupid...

If it is a proved scientific fact, it's ok by me. So far I don't see the hard evidence, and I'm afraid the research is going the way of environmental research. That is to pit one group of scientists against another.

It's an advertising campaign designed to garner attention and invite discussion.

I think it's very good at doing both.

Hell - we're in another COUNTRY on another CONTINENT and we're discussing it.

Bullshit...

ALL advertising campaigns are designed to garner attention and invite discussion.

What's being questioned is the METHOD...

I could want to "garner attention and invite discussion" into how to make a good steak on the grill...

But I wouldn't do it by showing videos of cattle getting sliced open and organs pulled out by the hand...

That's just bad taste (pun intended)...

The idea of using a newborn with the word "homosexual" written on his wristband, may at this time, belong in the "premature" ward!

Care to enlighten me on that?
What I meant, by the way, was each political group would use whatever statistics they can gather for their own purposes. Do you have new info? If so please share.

Many yers back there was a magazine cover that I remember...

I believe that it was TIME magazine.

There was a picture of a baby and the title was IS THIS CHILD GAY?

I also see it as a way to open a discussion rather than an exploitation.
