They usually aren't being stupid, they want to create an image that they are staffed by clean, mature and responsible people. These things matter in business.

Many people consider tattoos low, and a sign of an immature personality. Some people consider them a sign of criminal activity, and some people consider them a sign of drug use. Most who don't have or want them, I believe, consider them a sign of poor judgement.

In fact, I don't know anyone other than their wearers who generally consider them a positive sign of anything.

I've seen E.R. personnel put on double gloves when and unconscious patient was found to be heavily tattooed.

Were I an employer, I'd certainly want to avoid people with visible tattoos in an indoor, across-the-desk, or across-the-counter customer contact position.

Well, people do have the right to have stupid, uninformed opinions.

It's not so much the employers, but the customer's of the employers.

I work in a Bible Belt area.... when we didn't enforce the 'covered tattoo' rule we had many comments/complaints about employees tattoos, and usually the ones that depicted knives, skulls, death, and other assorted gruesomness brought the most negative comments.

But you can't discriminate, due to the letigious society were are in, so ALL tattoos must be covered.

Personally, I couldn't care if a person has a tattoo, as long as they don't care if I stare long enough to figure out what the tattoo is.

The problem isn't just with employers, it's their customers too. Fastest way to Lower your income is tats and piercings.

Seems to me these standards are no different than professionalism standards that require people in certain professions to wear a coat and tie rather than a t-shirt. There's no LOGICAL reason an attorney should wear a tie, but they usually do because the look is considered more professional. Appearances and professionalism do go hand-in-hand.
