Default Best advice you've ever been given

I was thinking this because I followed someones advice today and something very good happened.

I have been good friends with a man for 5 years. I have had feelings stronger than that for a while. My best friend encouraged me to say how I felt. I did today and now we're a couple. (I found out she felt him out before encouraging me).

The other best advice I ever got was in this recession - as much as you can save like you could lose your job tomorrow no matter how stable you think your job and your employer is.

You understand, that this answer changes with time and mood.

But I'd say that the advice that my Father gave me has proved to be the most reliable and useful: your feelings about most things are unimportant.

Man I have a lot of advice I follow and it works. Just a few gems that can be pretty crass.

Never do business with people that don't have money. -Old boss

Make a to do list and f*cking do it, it's not a to do later list and other sh*t gets added tomorrow.- Dad

Not wanting to finish is you becoming a p*ssy, come up with a plan to de-p*ssy, by that I mean finish the job now. -Dad

Only two kinds of people in the world, the one's that run sh*t and the other a**holes that do what the people that run sh*t tell them to do. It's better to be the guy running sh*t. -Dad

Not your fault? You were f*cking standing there directing sh*t it's your f*cking fault. My fault was trusting you in the first place I guess we're all guilty here. Better not happen again. -Dad

Watch those cranes and heavy equipment. Dead people don't watch out for that sh*t. -Dad

Your father must have been quite an amazing (and successful) man.

The most important thing in the world is attitude. We control whether we are going to be happy or sad, successful or fail, good or bad, and when we chose the right attitude, good things will always happen......Lou Holtz

Set perfection as your standard, you don't do yourself or anybody around you a favor by lowering that standard on anything - attitude, personality, cooperation and interface with others, family or education. Set a high standard for yourself and your children, and insist that they hit that standard......Mrs. Elizabeth Foley, HS, 1966, when she insisted I had missed a book report and would not graduate with my class unless I submitted it - three days before graduating from HS. I got her that book report - in two days - "Mice & Men" and always respected her for not letting me off the hook.

That second one? Could be the motto by which the Baby Boomer Generation is judged. We have lowered the standard on everything from politics, education, moral behavior, finances - public and private, you name it - the standard our parents set, we have kicked it away.

We can brawl and fight to solve a problems, but if you can win a battle without fighting you know you have a skill. From literal warfare to petty domestic issues, this reigns true in my opinion.

Two things.

I was doing some electrical work for a contractor out of Wisconsin. The head of the company was an older Jewish person whom I learned to have major respect for (as a subcontractor, you usually were at odds with the general contractor). One of the most important things he taught me was how to arrange your day. He said to always choose the toughest thing you had to do during the day and do it first. After that, your day was downhill all the way. This strategy works best for people who really love their job.

My older brother and I were working on an electrical project where we were doing the design as well as the installation. One of the items of work the owner asked for would be extremely difficult to accomplish. I said it was impossible and couldn't be done. My brother replied, if it has to be done, it can't be impossible. After thinking about it, I agreed and figured out a way to do it. This is a very valuable lesson in life. Nothing is impossible if you really put your mind to it.
