But if "The Market" says they are there to give small farms a chance, then they are going against their mission...

Which I think is ok too. Let someone else set up another farmers market that publicly shuns chains. May the best farmer win.

This is true. They still have the right to be silly or hypocritical.

Ultimately, every business has at it's core the mission of "Make money.", this may be a violation of their Vision, but as a Mission, this lines up with all businesses.

Also, we don't know the whole story. It may very well be that the people running the Market could be in a financial bind and they got Great Harvest to back them in exchange for a spot in the Market and by doing so are keeping the whole thing going without having to raise rates for everyone. My point is that we don't have all the facts, so we can't judge their actions. If my scenario were true, would anyone here have a problem with bringing in a "big spender" to keep costs down for the "little guys"??

I don't think that farmers markets are supposed to be for those unable to afford stores.

But, let the market decide. If I go to my local farmers market (one of three) I am NOT going to buy from Safeway if they set up there. If others want to buy there let them.

However, a national chain bread store has started selling at the local market here, representing themselves as a smaller business.

The question is: Should they be allowed to do so?

I have mixed feelings about it. I have no issue with competition. It's beneficial to everyone. But, farmers markets are not for national chain stores. That's what malls are for. The market is a collaborative effort among local people with limited funds and resources to provide local, cheaper, high quality foodstuffs to the local residents. On the other hand, people don't have to buy bread from this place. But on yet another hand, they are misrepresenting themselves.

Thoughts?

Seems funny to me that a big chain would even be interested. Here in AZ., farmer's markets are usually a lot more expensive than our local grocery stores. Sometimes the food is of questionable quality. It's hard to grow produce in 110 degree weather even with a hot house.

Ahh... around here the markets are far cheaper with far superior quality. The supermarket cannot compare to the local prices OR the quality of the produce. The local farmers have no middlemen to pay.

Local:
Farm - > Truck - > Market -> Consumer

As opposed to Farm-> Warehouse -> Truck -> Distribution center-> Truck -> Warehouse-> Truck-> Supermarket-> Consumer

When we lived in southern Illinois, the farmer's markets were a lot better than the supermarkets. Of course, the ground and weather conditions are much better there than they are in Arizona. And the people were a hell of a lot more friendly.
