Umm.. but it IS a civil rights issue. Just as interracial marriage was a civil rights issue, so is the blatant gender/sex discrimination in marriage now one.

Exactly. You'd rebel with the South and say that rights are state issues.

No rebellion is involved, even the President agreed with Dick Cheney that it is a state issue.

![]() Perhaps his opinion will evolve even further. I'm very optimistic that this issue won't be an issue much longer. I hope he sees that there are many federal rights we straight married people have that same-sex married couples don't have. To exclude rights from a group of people that are afforded to other people is a civil rights issue...and a nasty one at that.

Of course Dick Cheney agrees. He was probably pro slavery when he fought for the Confederacy.

The first Republican President campaigned on an abolition plarform. He thought it was a Federal issue. Clearly the Confederate states thought he considered it a Federal issue as well. Your assertion is utter nonsense. |

The Confederacy held the states could decide the issue of slavery themselves? That is a novel theory. Robert E Lee wrote that it was a problem the Cofederacy would have to deal with slavery as a national issue. Oh I know, all the Confederate states just happened to agree that slavery was good. ![]() |
