Assembly Speaker Silver steers license plan past GOP block
BY JOE MAHONEY DAILY NEWS ALBANY BUREAU CHIEF Wednesday, October 24th 2007, 4:00 AM ALBANY - Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver blocked a Republican-led assault on Gov. Spitzer's plan to let illegal immigrants get driver's licenses on Tuesday. GOP-authored measures that would have derailed the controversial new rules were ruled "non germane" - though 17 Democrats strayed from Silver's fold by voting to allow consideration of a so-called hostile amendment touted by Assembly GOP Leader Jim Tedisco. Silver - who controls 107 votes in the 150-member house - personally lobbied members of his conference to stick with Spitzer on the issue, insiders said. Tedisco vowed to take the fight to court Oct. 31 to try to block the new rules from taking effect. "By handing out licenses to illegal aliens, the governor's plan would make us less safe, less secure," Tedisco said. Assembly Democrats said the driver license issue has triggered unease in their ranks. "He keeps telling us he's 'right,' but we're the ones who have to take the heat from the public and be exposed to political attack mailings," one Democrat told the Daily News, citing a statewide poll showing 72% of New Yorkers oppose the policy. More? http://www.nydailynews.com/news/2007...license_p.html I also oppose this, these are "illegal" immigrants..WTF is wrong with you people?

As a woman married to a LEGAL immigrant, I find actions like this appalling. There were no handouts or free grabs for my hubby and me when he moved here. We had to go through the red tape, headaches, and financial costs to assure him the privelage to be here...
And seeing this type of thing makes the sacrifices we had to make look like a complete waste. |

On one hand, I'm appalled at the idea.
On the OTHER hand, living in a so-called 'sanctuary city' with a large illegal population, I would like to know that the jerk who can't drive properly has a driver's license and address and insurance after he hits me. Frankly, illegals NOT having driver's licenses really is most detrimental to legal drivers. |
