How sexual minorities in Africa became collateral damage in the U.S. culture wars
Uganda has been in the news for attempting to legislate harsh anti-gay measures criminalizing (with the death penalty in some cases) homosexuality and those who refuse to report it with the support of American mega-churches. What I didn't realize is, it's not only Uganda that is undergoing an upheavel under the hand of fundamentalism gone awry... Quote:

Actually, the rage is in the correct spot. The article, dealing specifically with Uganda, is about Christianity. Christian groups funded by American Christian churches who are acting against the human rights of homosexuals in Uganda. Killing them for their "sin" of homosexuality.

You know what? The more I think about this the more pissed off I become. I'm angry that someone would have the audacity to try to diminish or side-step the atrocities that have been occurring under the flag of Christianity.
I hear all the time that the United States is a Christian nation. Not that I necessarily buy that argument because I think the distinctions are far more nuanced than that, but lets assume for just a moment that the assertion is true. Let's assume that the United States is a Christian nation. If we are a Christian nation, we should be VERY concerned about what other nations do while invoking the name of Jesus Christ. We should be VERY concerned about nations and organizations that pollute the Word and use it to justify atrocities. We should be VERY concerned about our citizens, our churches, our religious institutions funding these organizations. If we are indeed a Christian nation, we should be concerned with how others are abusing the faith. I hear all the time about how we need to focus on the Muslim population, but how can we do that when we don't have our own house, the Christian house, in order? In no way shape or form do I diminish the atrocities that have been done in the name of other religions. They are abhorrent. We as a human race are diminished by these horrid actions. But if we are indeed a Christian nation, the actions of our "brethren" should be found to be most disturbing. They are taking something and polluting it, twisting the words of Christ into hate and persecution. Don't be fooled, this streak of atrocities in Uganda is done in the name of Christianity. It is a bloody deadly business. And it is funded by American Christians.

You know what I'm sick of? People throwing Christians in as the horrible people behind things like this. The only link to Christianity is they supported a pro family conference but you and the author make it sound as if it was an edict from the Pope to kill homosexuals. It wasn't. The author couldn't even quote the speaker as calling for such a thing.

It's not terribly complicated. Pro-family here in the United States means anti-gay, so why wouldn't it mean anti-gay in Uganda? Oh wait. It obviously does. And giving them money to support a "pro-family" conference knowing that the money is used by a terrorist organization to enforce the Ten Commandments at gunpoint? Christians are the people behind these horrible things. I'm not saying that they are horrible people, unless they meant for this to happen with their funding/support. But if they meant for it to happen they should be charged with accessory. If they didn't mean for it to happen they should be forced to take an up close view of the things done to these Ugandan homosexuals. But nice how you change the subject. First you denied that it was even Christian. Now you're denying that the events are even taking place. Anything to avoid the reality.

Of course you are. You can't handle the truth. Name one "pro-family" organization that is also pro-gay.

Do a Google search for "pro family organizations". This is what you get... 1. American Family Association: Anti-gay 2. Defend the Family: Anti-gay 3. Family Research Council: Anti-gay Why are these organizations both "pro-family" and "anti-gay". Well I would assert that they are not really "pro-family", they are merely what our society has termed to be "pro-family". They are only "pro-family" if it conforms to their narrow idea of what a family should be. That vision does not include homosexuals. These "pro-family" groups oppose every effort to recognize families led by homosexuals. They make every effort to paint the homosexuals as some sort of sex crazed agenda pushers, but the truth of the matter is that all the homosexuals want is equal protections for their families. That's pretty damned "pro-family", but these "pro-family" groups will have none of it. If these groups were really pro-family, they would do whatever they could to ensure the stability of all families. They would work FOR gay marriage because it creates legal bonds and protections for families. It creates stability in our society. But that's not the case. They're out there boycotting Home Depot because Home Depot supports equal right. It's their right, but they're doing so under the guise of being pro-family, and that's a flat out lie. It's these pro-family organizations that are raising money and sending to Uganda, money that is being used to persecute gays in ways they only wish they could get away with here. The truth is that I wish they would be pro-family, but they are only pro-straight-christian family and oppose all other family formulations.
