Default Are politicians more likely to be psychopaths?

I wonder if what this video says might actually be true:

Anyone who has spent a lot of time with politicians can see that many have a different way of seeing the world than the average person. They thrive on "spin" which is another word for lying, they love attention and they seem to live by the notion, "It is far easier to ask for forgiveness than for permission." And all that seems to fit in nicely with psychopathic personality.

Any comments?

I think many are interested in money. They're not psychopaths. Some i'm sure are. Jim Moran comes to mind. it may be that he is just old and used to getting his way. I'm also sure they're isolated in DC. The world works different there. They're just greedy pigs.

And there are some that are good men.

There may be a higher tendency toward narcissism, but I doubt psychopath fits the description of most politicians. They just like power and recognition, as it strokes their egos and makes them feel needed.

I would agree with that assessment.

According to Dr. R. D. Hare they score above average on his "Psychopathy Checklist".

I read his book sometime in the early nineties titled "without conscious".Itta have you giving the fish eye to family and friends for a month after you read it.

if you have an hour to spare, here is a link to a radio program on that subject.

Exactly. While there are some traits that are a hazard to success -- tendency to be irresponsible for example, other traits such as feeling they have a special destiny, lack of empathy yet the ability to fake it really well and the lack of guilt are big plus factors for pushing ahead in a political career. Those psychopaths who can discipline themselves can go far.
