Default Gas Prices

Just hearing the news about gas prices prompted me to look back at recent history and see if anything made sense.
The only thing I see so far is the spikes are gradually higher and they tend to happen during RV/vacation time or holidays. A lot of people go south around October and June-August they get tired of the heat and often get out of town even for just the weekends but seem to be more mobile.
So while real wages aren't keeping up, the price per gallon is gradually rising.

We've been fortunate to stay about .25 below the national avg. here. In fact, the price has steadily dropped about .08 over the past week.

Ours aren't too bad either considering the national average. A lot of the big towns though, where I would expect there to be a break are higher.

Who makes the most money (profit) off of the sale of a gallon of gas?
The federal government?
The state government?
The gas station owner?
The oil company?
Me?

Prices always go up when holidays and summer rolls around. No big surprise. Those are the peak times when the gas companies bleed the populace.

Actually, it's usually the state government with the federal government as second. (Some states have a lower tax rate than the US government, but most do not)
The federal government charges 18.4 cents, the states are variable. http://www.api.org/statistics/fuelta...el_Summary.pdf

Yeah I guess I was just looking for more and that's really all I found so far as the charting of it goes.
In Idaho we have a 25 cent gas/diesel tax so with the fed tax that's still only 43 cents. Other states have higher or lower . Gas Taxes Some of those are interesting Florida and Alaska for instance.

I know here in Idaho farm diesel is not taxed (and contains a red dye).

I wonder who leaks these predictions about gas maybe going up and why. Is it to test consumer reaction or is it to affect the market itself maybe?
