Study: Cell phone use disrupts sleep

Quote:
CAMBRIDGE, Mass., Jan. 19 (UPI) -- A study in Sweden and the United States finds that using a cell phone just before bedtime interferes with sleep patterns.

Scientists at the Karolinska Institute and Uppsala University and Wayne State University in Detroit studied 35 men and 36 women, The Independent reported. Half were exposed to radiation like that emitted by cell phones, while the others thought they were being exposed to it.

Those who were exposed to the radiation took longer to get into deep sleep. They also spent less time in the deepest part of sleep.

The findings bear out those of a large study of Belgian teens that found those who used their cell phones after they actually went to bed were more likely to complain of tiredness.

The U.S.-Swedish study was funded by the Mobile Manufacturers Association, which called the results "inconclusive."

Progress in Electromagnetics Research Symposium at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology published the study.
There should be some sort of "unwritten rule" about cell phone use just like the old theory of not eating and then going swimming...

Well, in my case that article is just preaching to the chior in a ways...I don't like cell phones and refuse to own one.

Hubby has one, but we have an unwritten rule that when we go places together, he leaves it at home. Plus it's turned off when he's home.

Nothing frustrates me more then seeing people using them going down the road, walking around stores, or sitting in a restraunt chatting with people on the phone instead of the people they are seated with...So if the things were done away with completely, I'd not be missing them a bit. LOL!

We live in a hypocrisy...

10 years ago when someone saw somebody using a cellphone, they'd complain that it's some bigwig attorney or rich a-hole showing off instead of having an important conversation...

Now that it's cheaper, the same complainers are doing it themselves...

I dunno...All I know is that when I leave the house to go somewhere, I'm leaving most times to get away from the phone as is. So the last thing I want, when I'm out trying to relax/get away is take the phone with us so instead of reaching us at home, they can reach us away from home?

Luckily, hubby has his simply so I can reach him in an emergency at work...With him working on the river, there's no phone lines if something happens at home. So it's almost a necessity. But when we're together, then if something happens, he's already there so it's a waste. And there's always pay/business phones close by so getting to a phone isn't an impossibility if it's really needed. LOL!

What I find interesting about the types I see with those cell phones permenantly attached to their ears is the fact they're the ones crying the loudest about not having any private time? Of how stressful their lives are cause they're always having to answer to someone?

Well dang it! Turn the phone off and find some time to relax and unstress. How can you get away from 'the world' if you're keeping the world only a phone call away at all times?

I have a cell phone but I almost never use it. I use pre paid minutes and 60 minutes lasts me 2 months! They do have their place,my wife likes the security of having it in the van with her during her long drives home after midnight. Still she has used it only once, the last two cars we owned were destroyed when she hit deer on her way home. The deer need a cell phone to warn each other that my wife is approaching..

I find that very interesting. I have one for security, but I also rarely use it. But last night i DID use it to call a friend after I went to bed to tell her I could be calling off today due to an injury, and I had the absolute hardest time sleeping.
