End Of An Era: Torre Turns Down Yankees

Quote:
NEW YORK (CBS) ― New York Yankees manager Joe Torre rejected a contract offer to return in 2008, CBS 2 HD has learned, a decision that will likely send shockwaves through a large majority of the Yankees fan base who have voiced their desire to keep the beloved manager for another season.

Torre was offered a one-year contract believed to be worth $5 million with an option for 2009.

"It's a difficult day," general manager Brian Cashman said.

The Yankees said a search for a successor is already underway. The list of candidates will almost certainly include bench coach and Yankee great Don Mattingly and 2006 N.L. Manager of the Year Joe Girardi.

"It is now time for the New York Yankees to move forward," Yankees President Levine said. "We thought it was very fair. It clearly was at the top of the market, but we respect Joe's decision."
It's a shame the Phils retained manager Charlie "I'm a moron" Manual...

Torre would've looked good in the red & white...

If...

If this is actually a face saving deal for Joe to go out gracefully and for "The (other) Boss" to avoid fan animosity, it couldn't have been orchestrated any better.

Joe will be able to do whatever he wants now, retire or manage again at a suitably high salary level and be welcomed back to Yankee Stadium (or whatever) and be on good terms with everyone and everyone with him.

And Steinbrenner will have replaced Joe, which we have no doubt he wanted to do, without suffering any of the repercussions of having cut the popular Torre.

Nice move all around!
