Anchor suspended 2 weeks for "lynch" comment

Quote:
Faldo and Tilghman were discussing young players who could challenge the world's No. 1 player toward the end of Friday's broadcast at Kapalua when Faldo suggested that "to take Tiger on, maybe they should just gang up for a while."

"Lynch him in a back alley," Tilghman replied.

"While we believe that Kelly's choice of words was inadvertent and that she did not intend them in an offensive manner, the words were hurtful and grossly inappropriate," Golf Channel said in its statement. "Consequently, we have decided to suspend Kelly for two weeks, effective immediately."

Woods and Tilghman have known each other 12 years. She was picked to host a club demonstration with Woods in south Florida when he talked about new products from Nike Golf.

Tilghman was helped when Mark Steinberg, Woods' agent at IMG, said it was a non-issue and considered the matter "case closed."

"Tiger and Kelly are friends, and Tiger has a great deal of respect for Kelly," Steinberg said Tuesday night in a statement released by Golf Channel. "Regardless of the choice of words used, we know unequivocally that there was no ill-intent in her comments."

Tilghman had said in a previous statement she apologized directly to Woods, and the immediate support from Woods' camp was critical.
So she used a poor choice of words, apologized, the "victim" said "No problem", there was no ill-intent, and both parties are friends...

But a microphone is within reach, so the country's biggest racemonger showed up...

Quote:
Before her suspension was announced, Sharpton spoke earlier on CNN's "Prime News" and continued to push for her firing, saying he wanted to meet with Golf Channel because the comments were "an insult to all blacks."

"Lynching is not murder in general, it's not assault in general," Sharpton said. "It's a specific racial term that this women should be held accountable for. What she said is racist. Whether she's a racist ... is immaterial. She's a broadcaster. The channel has to be accountable to the public."
At this point, the country could really use a vocal announcement from Tiger for Sharpton to shut the hell up...

But, of course, that would lead to the inevitable "Uncle Tom" statements...

I doubt if Sharpton is a spokesperson for real black people who go to work every day, love their families, and want the American dream much like real whites and hispanics do.
He's more of a clown.

I agree...

90% of whites, blacks and every other color just want to get done work, go home, and relax...

...and go to Political Wrinkles and discuss current issues...

He is a spokesman for SOME black people, but the majority of us really don't care about his politics one way or the other.

Personally, I'm always concerned when a situation such as this one becomes an issue. It takes away from the REAL racial issues that exist.

As an aside... The word LYNCH refers specifically to HANGING. It makes the whole 'back alley' comment rather silly. What would you hang a person from there? A dumpster?

I have to add this point...

I don't like Al Sharpton's politics, but he is getting out there and he is speaking up. THAT I CAN respect. If there were more people (of all groups) that were standing up and taking action, then there wouldn't be the problem of the vocal few speaking for everyone.

IN NECESSARY SITUATIONS...

If not, it becomes a "cry wolf" scenario...

When a situation arises where a strong voice is NEEDED, the ones stepping up (like Sharpton) will have no credibility due to their antics is previous situations where molehills become mountains and people are unduly criticized...

Unless there are those that speak up and offer a balanced veiw, then the ones like him are the voice.

The 'necessary situations' are all of them. Those that will cry wolf need the balanced voice, and those that say nothing with REAL situations need the ROAR of the people.

And that's a sad commentary if that's the best they can do...

All of them?...

Go talk with the victims of Sharpton & Tawanna Brawley...

They may disagree with you...

I think you hit it right on the head with the bolded line. I find Sharpton to be one of the most disturbing personality in American politics. At the center of any race conflict, real or imagined, you find Sharpton and his bullhorn. Often, he comes across to me as a person not so much concerned with the issue at hand as making sure his face is seen on television. I hate to say something that can be taken as cruel, but the sooner Sharpton is erased from the public eye, the sooner America can move forward resolving the real issues of race in this country.
