New Jersey legislature apologizes for slavery

Quote:
New Jersey tonight joined a list of states that have apologized for slavery, after lawmakers overwhelming passed a resolution expressing the state's regret.

The resolution merely offers the Legislature's opinion and would not require the governor's signature. It would be recorded in the state annals of declarations.

The resolution's sponsor, Assemblyman William D. Payne (D., Newark), noted that New Jersey had 12,000 slaves and was the last Northern state to free them. Last night, New Jersey became the first Northern state to apologize.

"This is an apology for their descendants . . . and all mankind," he said.

But Assemblyman Richard A. Merkt (R., Morris) said that the resolution was the first step toward reparations - the controversial idea of compensating slavery's descendants.

He said he would have supported a resolution expressing the state's regret, but not an apology.

"Most of the ancestors of today's New Jersey residents did not even arrive in the U.S. prior to the emancipation of the slaves," he said. "None of us can truly apologize because none of us was responsible for it."

The resolution passed the Assembly 59-8, with eight members abstaining. It passed the Senate 29-2, without debate.
I'm sure everyone will sleep better tonight in New Jersey...now that THAT'S over with...

Now when will black people start apologizing for the Wayan brothers?...

The Wayans Brothers were quite funny on IN LIVING COLOR.

Movies past that point are up in the air.

Seriously...

An apology, whether you agree or not, may help to soothe anger. Simply saying (officially) 'It was not okay to do that' will help some.

What does it hurt?

First, the real question should be "I guess all the higher priority stuff is done?"...

Second, as per the article...

All you need is ONE JUDGE to allow a lawsuit to happen (since the state has confessed guilt) whereas the "plantiff" will demand punative damages, and the precedent will be set...Expect states going bankrupt...

There are other things to take care of, yes. It doesn't change the fact that admitting a wrong is a good thing.

Never admit that you were wrong in case you might get sued?

You know, full well, that I am not talking about individuals.

I will apologize for nothing related to slavery, our family has been in this nation for only 80 years. My father was from Canada and my mother was from Germany. I'm sympathetic to all who suffered under slavery but apologize..never!

I am truly sorry slavery ever happened anywhere-the Greek or Roman Empires, Native American history, Asia, wherever.
The reason it is such a blight on the United States' past is because we were founded on freedom.

But there have been many held slaves throughout history. My ancestors among them as they landed in 18th century British Florida. As they arrived from Italy and Greece and Menorca, they were supposed to be indentured servants, but so far from civilization, the Scottish land owner kept them from their freedom for years. They were treated very cruelly. Were not allowed to have meat. Women were only allowed to breast feed three times a day so they could work the indigo plantation along with the men. Consequently a lot of infants died. There was a documented stoning of a child by his peers as ordered by the overseer. Husbands were forced to beat their wives publicly if any fish or game was found in their food or risk having the whip turned on themselves. Do we (Minorcans, as we've called ourselves since 1768) want an apology? Who would give it? Those bad men died a long time ago.
