When you need revenue you jump on the smokers. That you say you only want to help. Howz about a 5 dollar tax increase on beer per bottle? Whaddaya say to that?

An ex-smoker myself, I have great sympathy for what is being done to the cost of a vice.

They do it and proclaim it's for healthcare... uh, yeah, ok.

They do it and proclaim it's to help the homeless. Uh, yeah, ok.

Lets call it what it is, shall we? FUNDRAISING. That's all it is, you aren't fooling anybody. And taxing it more is not really going to stop some people.... they will just cut back on something else.

Did they learn nothing from prohibition?

Just think how much money they could bring in if they put a $2 tax on each condom or birth control pill.

Yeah the gay community would be up in arms cause I think they are the only faction who actively advocate for safer sex among their own.

I truly don't know that for sure. And that's all I'll say about that.

I think singling out the same sin for tax each and every time you want to add a pool to your neighborhood (figure of speech) is outrageous.
There will come a day when soda and chips are excessively taxed. Mark my words.

The road is already being paved for that. They are using the same path that was used to tax tobacco.

This is a tourist tax, for the most part.

Any time you tax a vice you end up creating more crime. Tourists stuck in Manhattan will pay the extra fee, everyone else will pay 1/2 price on the black market or in a neighboring state.

It sounds good but I bet it ends up revenue neutral. Everyone already knows to carry enough cigs with you to not have to waste your money buying them once you get to New York.

Once they stop me from carrying any into the city when I fly in for two days, because they order a search and seizure at the airport, then we have a problem...

We're on the flip side down here, you know that M1. Over on this side of the mountain, a carton will run you $43 or so.... a bargain for any nor'easter traveling through. 5 Carton limit, though... don't want y'all stocking up and shortchange the Dept of Revenue in your beloved state.

Michigan has been cracking down on people who travel out of state to buy cheaper cigarettes. They have had state police posted on some of the roads watching for people who drive through and then come back a short time later. If they have cartons of cigarettes from out of state they are confiscated. And I understand that troopers from the other states are notifying our state troopers when they see someone loading up their vehicles with cheap cigarettes. It seems that our government is more concerned with catching illegal smokers than they are with catching illegal immigrants.
