George Bush proved that.

I would do my best to change the mindset that Social Security is some sort of retirement plan and instead make it known for what it really is, a safety net for those unable to provide for themselves. I would reward those who planned ahead by cutting, if not eliminating, the taxes on "normal" withdrawls from retirement accounts. We have made a commitment to providing this safety net, we have not however made a commitment to providing a retirement plan for those unwilling to take responsibility for their own actions. I would also reward companies who provide savings matching plans that exceed ten percent of the employees annual wages by creating a tax credit where employers get a credit based upon the percentage of wages contributed to retirement savings plans.

Subject: Energy - I would end the mentality that the production of fossil fuels is inherently evil. We live in a nation where our consumption vastly out paces our production. We spend a great deal of time dealing with countries and organizations that do not have any concern for the American taxpayer. I would put a two year moritorium on funding alternative energy production and utilize those funds to modernize and expand domestic production and transmission. We will increase efficiency and safety through this process, making fossil fuels safer to use and transport. We have not built a new refinery in the US since the 70's. It is time we stop kidding ourselves and start making decisions based upon the reality of our situation. This investment will pay for itself by increasing the tax base and will create greater long term opportunities for the development and transmission of alternative energy. I would also open up the arena for the further use of nuclear power.

Subject: BP- I do not consider BP to be a terrorist organization as others have suggested. Lord knows they didn't want to be out the money its going to cost them to clean up this mess, let alone the lives of their workers and the lost revenue in the form of oil floating about in the gulf. My issue however is the fact we have a British company making profits off of American workers and American resources. Not that I don't love the British, but I find it difficult to justify foreign entities making so much money off of wholly American resources. As President I would end federal production leases to companies not based in the United States.

Subject: Balanced Budgets - As President I would veto ANY spending bill from Congress that did not pay for itself with cuts from other areas or appropriate tax increases. We expect the American family to live within its means and there is no reason not to expect the same from our federal government. These budgets MUST include provisions to pay down/off the current debt. I would work to pass a balanced budget amendment that included language allowing for deficit spending ONLY in the case of national emergencies such as war or natural disasters.

Subject: Marriage - I would tell Congress that they had a choice, either open the legal institution of marriage to all consenting adults or eliminate the legal institution. It will not be the business of my administration to create or continue a special status on the personal lives of citizens that is not open to all of them. I would send to the hill legislation that would allow for a simple contract between adults giving them the same legal rights as marriage such as rights to survivorship and medical directives. We should not punish any of our citizens simply because they do not fall in line with the Judeo-Christian mentality on personal relationships. I also do not buy the argument that "marriage" should be separate from "civil unions" in legal terminology. If the religious right is so dead set on protecting marriage then they can feel free to support my call to eliminate the legal word.

Subject: Tax Exempt status - We live in a nation where we believe that charitable works should be rewarded. I have no fundamental issues with this. However, there comes a point where some tax exempt institutions use their status to raise money for political means. I will eliminate this. If ANY non-profit/tax-exempt group donates to a political campaign or party, they lose their tax exempt status. If they have the means to donate to political campaigns, then they have the means to pay taxes on their income. This will help reduce some of the senseless divisions caused by special interest politics.

Subject: Infrastructure - As President, I would task the Department of Transportation, the Department of Commerce, the Department of Energy, and the Department of Homeland Security to develop a ten year plan that would modernize our infrastructure. We cannot afford to continue to neglect our highways, ports, and rail-lines as our economy is dependent upon the safe transport of goods and services.
Wow....I like the way you think! Do you have a PAC???

all the associated perks.

Cat slave you have to realize dabateman, has put plenty of time over a while in his "If I Were President"

As we have debated a lot of this for a while on and off over years. So a good memory helps.

Note I thanked him too.... He knows his material.
