'Naked Twister' nights inspire suburb's sex club ban

DUNCANVILLE, Texas (AP) -- The most popular address on Cedar Ridge Drive is Jim Trulock's split-level home, which has a group sex room and attracts as many as 100 people to swinger parties featuring "Naked Twister" nights.

But the festivities could soon be over. In response to neighbors' complaints, the city has outlawed sex clubs in residential areas. Citations have been issued, and search warrants may be next.

"It's crazy that they want to force their morality down our throats," said Dawn Burton, 45, a regular guest at the parties. "We're all frustrated."

So are those who complain of the noise, traffic and parking problems that occur in their otherwise quiet, upscale neighborhood every Friday and Saturday, when Trulock's home is transformed into "The Cherry Pit."

Duncanville, which proclaims itself "The Perfect Blend of Family, Community and Business," is an unlikely venue for a neighborhood swinger club. The city of 36,000 just southwest of Dallas has about 50 places of worship and not a single registered sexually oriented business.

Duncanville officials insist they are not just another prudish Texas town giving the boot to spouse-swappers. They say it all boils down to a matter of law: Trulock is operating a business featuring live sex acts.

"It's not trying to judge anyone or pass judgment on someone's lifestyle," city spokeswoman Tonya Lewis said.

I read this article and laughed. First of all that community is trying to judge them based upon their lifestyle. It's just one of those things that's quite obvious to me. But that's not even the real point. If you are going to operate a business, get the proper permits and do so in properly zoned areas. I'm the first to say "Hey, you wanna get naked with 40 of your friends and do all kinds of crazy things? Fine by me.", but we need to be realistic and understand that because this is going on in a residential area, there have to be some standards to protect impressionable minors.

They just ask them to be smart, truthful, honest, and show a modicum of good sense." Ann Richards, Former Texas Governor

My thoughts also, these events would be better suited in a rural community.I live on a large parcel of land,I could call it Spencer's Ranch but I'm getting too old for all that excitement..

That was my line of thinking when I read this, too...

Permits, licenses, and zoning laws must be enforced for the community's sake...And I'm talking about the quantity of the people; not the quality...

Now, if he wasn't charging for access, there would be a hell of a difficult time limiting him.

Nope...I still see the same problems with noise, parking, property values, and other regulations that are irrelevant of whether or not people are being charged(I've read that they accept donations and are not actually forcing people to pay to get in)...

Noise violations? Maybe.

Parking? Generally it's too bad to the person complaining. Parking on the street is legal as no one owns the street. We've had issues with this here.

Property value? No laws protecting it. I'd have to read the restrictive covenant if there is one, but generally these covenants become unenforcible over time because none of the property owners want to adhere to them.

What other regulations are we talking about, because right now we are only dealing with noise violations.

The list would be too long to identify and we'd need to see a list of any/all complaints...

Here's a simple one...Guests of the place causing illegal tonnage or, at least, tonnage above the recommemandation of the flooring structures breaking zoning codes which puts the city at risk of having to save people through the use of EMTs & firefighters because the first floor is now in the basement...

But we don't know that this ones been broken. We would have to establish that this is the case before we could move forward. Based upon the reported claims, I'd say that the man has no violations other than noise.

I don't know about the specifics of the law in that county, but one would think that, according to the article, "as many as 100 people" trying to fit into a "split-level home" qualifies as a dangerous situation...
