Are American Muslims Today's "Negroes?"
In the same way that America rose to defend the rights of American Negroes in the 1960's, do you see America rising up to defend the rights of American Muslims? Yes? No? Why? Why Not?

American "Negroes" have the unique history of descending from slaves. Therefore
after a couple hundred years, their former subservient role was hard to erase from society. There had to be a lot of pain and talking and government involvement to make their entrance into main stream society more equal. Muslims on the other hand, are like any other race of people who enter this country as refugees. They will be hated for awhile, then the subject of suspicion, but finally melted in much like the Japanese, Korean, Vietnamese, Eastern Jew, post WWII German, etc.

I believe that saying religion is a choice brings too much simplicity to the table. Religion might be a choice, but many don't feel that they have a choice. If you are raised in a faith since birth, it's difficult to question the accuracy of that faith especially when the consequences could be HELL. Religion is a choice for those 30 and older. For anyone younger, religion is a reflection of your culture or your rebellion from your culture and has little to do with conscious decision making.

Anyhow, I was really trying to point out that you can't tell someone is a Muslim just by looking at them. Discriminating based on religion is a lot harder to do than discriminating based on ethnicity or skin color. I certainly don't feel America actually needs to rise up to protect the rights of Muslims because I don't see them being discriminated against to the level you do -- and given my skin tone one could easily mistake me for being Arabic.

I am a Christian, converted from Judaism.
It makes no difference how many years I live as a Christian, I will always be a Jew. There is no choice.
