There's a reason they call it a "flood plain". People just plain fail to understand that they are building on an area that gets flooded from time to time. That's the price you pay for living on a flood plain. I feel for the losses that these follks are going through, but they should have known what they were getting into when they decided to live there.

Very sympathetic. I live in California. I guess if I die in an earthquake I was just ignorant. Of if I live in Oregon and am wiped out by a Volcano well what the hell.

Where is a place where mother nature won't kick you ass from time to time.

It's not ignorance as much as it is me being tired of listening to people complain when the inevitable happens. If you live on a flood plain, you're going to get flooded, if you live in an earthquake zone, you're going to get shaken, if you live in a volcanicaly active area, expect ash and lava. People live in these areas and they have ZERO plan for handling the inevitable, that's what I dislike. If I lived in a flood plain, I'd have supplies laid in at all times, sandbags at the ready, flood ins. and a plan for an alternative place to go when the flood hits. Then I see pics of people scrambling to save what they have because they weren't ready for the inevitable and it makes me go "What the hell??? Didn't you know this was coming?? Maybe not the exact time, but you surely knew that the floods would come eventually. So why weren't you prepared???"

Yup...

That's why people in Florida are usually the least complainers about hurricanes...They shrug and say "It's expected."...

I certainly agree, but let's be honest...

No matter where you live some people will be prepared and some people won't. The media will inevitably seek out those who weren't and are whining.

Until a year ago I spent the previous 18 in the Orlando area. Folks on the coasts are very prepared for hurricanes but inland not so much. I wasn't prepared when my mother's house was nearly destroyed by a couple of trees. You have no idea what it's like having your mother move into your apartment

That's a great premise for a sitcom...

So what is your volcano plan? Same as pompei. Those people are rebuilding already. I don't see a bunch of whining. But you would like Zero whining. Give em a break. These cities on the rivers where built because of the river. The river towns once housed the most millionaires in the country. They are still ports and landings for the nations grain and coal. So once in a while they get wet. They'll survive. They always do.

Sometimes you can't even be prepared. A tornado could come down on your ass Saturday. Whatcha gonna do? Somebody out here on the left coast will say. "Morons living where they have tornado's." I mean why should people live in Kansas? Where does this judgmental attitude get people?

Basically, it's leave before the big boom. If it's so sudden as to leave no time for response, the big brains say that about the only thing you can do is find a place with a good view and video as much of it as possible. That way you have a chance at fame even though you're buried under 6' of ash and pumice.

I understand that most folks accept the situation and do their best to move on, but there's always that group that blames everyone else. Those are the ones doing the whining that I dislike. I've got no problem with the people who live in high risk areas that pick up the pieces and get on with life, but it's the ones who think that they are owed protection or recompense when they knowingly put themselves into that location that irk me. The survivors and the guys out there throwing sandbags, cutting firelines, etc. have my utmost respect. But the ones that sit opn thier butts and expect the world to take care of them just need to shut up and get their butts to work.
