Close friend of mine as a child fell into a slumber
No sign of life since '75 Then one day he just, what do you know I guess God just called his number He called me up he called me up and said "I've been awake about a week I'm thinking about asking the doctor If he could put me back to sleep" Then he laughed and said "Hey all the girls they look the same" Don't they know just what their mothers Paid in blood, and tears to change But the words that made me cry The thing he softly said It stayed with me, it keeps messing with my head He said, "If Jesus Christ is alive and well Then how come John & Elvis are dead?" G. Michael

"Too Old To Rock 'n' Roll: Too Young To Die"
The old Rocker wore his hair too long, wore his trouser cuffs too tight. Unfashionable to the end --- drank his ale too light. Death's head belt buckle --- yesterday's dreams --- the transport caf' prophet of doom. Ringing no change in his double-sewn seams in his post-war-babe gloom. Now he's too old to Rock'n'Roll but he's too young to die. He once owned a Harley Davidson and a Triumph Bonneville. Counted his friends in burned-out spark plugs and prays that he always will. But he's the last of the blue blood greaser boys all of his mates are doing time: married with three kids up by the ring road sold their souls straight down the line. And some of them own little sports cars and meet at the tennis club do's. For drinks on a Sunday --- work on Monday. They've thrown away their blue suede shoes. Now they're too old to Rock'n'Roll and they're too young to die. So the old Rocker gets out his bike to make a ton before he takes his leave. Up on the A1 by Scotch Corner just like it used to be. And as he flies --- tears in his eyes --- his wind-whipped words echo the final take and he hits the trunk road doing around 120 with no room left to brake. And he was too old to Rock'n'Roll but he was too young to die. No, you're never too old to Rock'n'Roll if you're too young to die Ian Anderson |

My Thanksgiving ~ Don Henley
A lot of things have happened Since the last time we spoke Some of them are funny Some of 'em ain't no joke And I trust you will forgive me If I lay it on the line I always thought you were a friend of mine Sometimes I think about you I wonder how you're doing now And what you're going through The last time I saw you We were playing with fire We were loaded with passion And a burning desire For every breath, for every day of living And this is my Thanksgiving Now the trouble with you and me, my friend Is the trouble with this nation Too many blessings, too little appreciation And I know that kind of notion—well, it just ain't cool So send me back to Sunday school Because I'm tired of waiting for reason to arrive It's too long we've been living These unexamined lives I've got great expectations I've got family and friends I've got satisfying work I've got a back that bends For every breath, for every day of living This is my Thanksgiving Have you noticed that an angry man Can only get so far Until he reconciles the way he thinks things ought to be With the way things are Here in this fragmented world, I still believe In learning how to give love, and how to receive it And I would not be among those who abuse this privilege Sometimes you get the best light from a burning bridge And I don't mind saying that I still love it all I wallowed in the springtime Now I'm welcoming the fall For every moment of joy Every hour of fear For every winding road that brought me here For every breath, for every day of living This is my Thanksgiving For everyone who helped me start And for everything that broke my heart For every breath, for every day of living This is my Thanksgiving |

Sorry one more tull.
"Heavy Horses" Iron-clad feather-feet pounding the dust An October's day, towards evening Sweat embossed veins standing proud to the plough Salt on a deep chest seasoning Last of the line at an honest day's toil Turning the deep sod under Flint at the fetlock, chasing the bone Flies at the nostrils plunder. The Suffolk, the Clydesdale, the Percheron vie with the Shire on his feathers floating Hauling soft timber into the dusk to bed on a warm straw coating. Heavy Horses, move the land under me Behind the plough gliding --- slipping and sliding free Now you're down to the few And there's no work to do The tractor's on its way. Let me find you a filly for your proud stallion seed to keep the old line going. And we'll stand you abreast at the back of the wood behind the young trees growing To hide you from eyes that mock at your girth, and your eighteen hands at the shoulder And one day when the oil barons have all dripped dry and the nights are seen to draw colder They'll beg for your strength, your gentle power your noble grace and your bearing And you'll strain once again to the sound of the gulls in the wake of the deep plough, sharing. Standing like tanks on the brow of the hill Up into the cold wind facing In stiff battle harness, chained to the world Against the low sun racing Bring me a wheel of oaken wood A rein of polished leather A Heavy Horse and a tumbling sky Brewing heavy weather. Bring a song for the evening Clean brass to flash the dawn across these acres glistening like dew on a carpet lawn In these dark towns folk lie sleeping as the heavy horses thunder by to wake the dying city with the living horseman's cry At once the old hands quicken --- bring pick and wisp and curry comb --- thrill to the sound of all the heavy horses coming home. |

Wind Beneath My Wings - Bette Midler
So I was the one with all the glory, while you were the one with all the strength. A beautiful face without a name for so long. A beautiful smile to hide the pain. Did you ever know that you're my hero, and everything I would like to be? I can fly higher than an eagle, for you are the wind beneath my wings. It might have appeared to go unnoticed, but I've got it all here in my heart. I want you to know I know the truth, of course I know it. I would be nothing without you. Did you ever know that you're my hero? You're everything I wish I could be. I could fly higher than an eagle, for you are the wind beneath my wings. Did I ever tell you you're my hero? You're everything, everything I wish I could be. Oh, and I, I could fly higher than an eagle, for you are the wind beneath my wings, 'cause you are the wind beneath my wings. Oh, the wind beneath my wings. You, you, you, you are the wind beneath my wings. Fly, fly, fly away. You let me fly so high. Oh, you, you, you, the wind beneath my wings. Oh, you, you, you, the wind beneath my wings. Fly, fly, fly high against the sky, so high I almost touch the sky. Thank you, thank you, thank God for you, the wind beneath my wings. |

Sappy song, but it always makes me cry, it makes me think of my mother...
Because you Loved me - Celine Dion For all those times you stood by me For all the truth that you made me see For all the joy you brought to my life For all the wrong that you made right For every dream you made come true For all the love I found in you I'll be forever thankful baby You're the one who held me up Never let me fall You're the one who saw me through through it all You were my strength when I was weak You were my voice when I couldn't speak You were my eyes when I couldn't see You saw the best there was in me Lifted me up when I couldn't reach You gave me faith 'coz you believed I'm everything I am Because you loved me You gave me wings and made me fly You touched my hand I could touch the sky I lost my faith, you gave it back to me You said no star was out of reach You stood by me and I stood tall I had your love I had it all I'm grateful for each day you gave me Maybe I don't know that much But I know this much is true I was blessed because I was loved by you You were my strength when I was weak You were my voice when I couldn't speak You were my eyes when I couldn't see You saw the best there was in me Lifted me up when I couldn't reach You gave me faith 'coz you believed I'm everything I am Because you loved me You were always there for me The tender wind that carried me A light in the dark shining your love into my life You've been my inspiration Through the lies you were the truth My world is a better place because of you You were my strength when I was weak You were my voice when I couldn't speak You were my eyes when I couldn't see You saw the best there was in me Lifted me up when I couldn't reach You gave me faith 'coz you believed I'm everything I am Because you loved me |

Dave Alvin is a great song writer. Here is a song about illegal immigration.
I’m just tryin’ to make a livin’ I’m an old man at thirty-nine With two kids and an ex-wife Who moved up to Riverside I’m workin’ down on the border Drivin’ back roads every night Mountains east of El Cajon North of the Tecate line. Where the California summer sun Will burn right through your soul But in the winter you can freeze to death In the California snow. I catch the ones I’m able to And watch the others slip away I know some by their faces And I even know some by name I guess they think that we’re all Movie stars and millionaires I guess that they still believe That dreams come true up here. But I guess the weather’s warmer down in Mexico And no one ever tells them ‘bout the California snow. Last winter I found a man and wife Just about daybreak Layin’ in a frozen ditch South of the interstate I wrapped ‘em both in blankets But she’d already died The next day we sent him back alone Across the borderline. I don’t know where they came from Or where they planned to go But we carried her all night long Through the California snow. Sometimes when I’m alone out here I get to thinkin’ about my life Maybe I should go to Riverside And try to fix things with my wife Or maybe just get in my truck And drive as far as I can go Away from all the ghosts that haunt The California snow. Where the California summer sun Can burn right to your soul And in the winter you can freeze to death In the California snow. |
