How many of you attractive, intelligent and discerning Political Wrinkles readers/posters would vote yay, in a New York City nanosecond, to have millions of your hard earned tax dollars spent to purchase one of these new hand-held lie detectors (see link below) - with the optional tamper-proof ankle straps/auto-lie-taser feature - for each and every federal, state and local politician - starting at the top with our illustrious commander-in-chief, all the way down to our humble and not so humble [read: San Franciscan] city counsel persons?
Die dulci freure, Joe Pentagon's New Weapon: Hand-Held Lie Detector P.S. I apologize to any and all Political Wrinkles reader/poster-politicians if you're offended by my 'Keepin' 'em honest' plebiscite. P.P.S. I guess what I actually mean (see P.S. above) is, I feel sorry for any Political Wrinkles reader/poster-pols I may have offended because that means you've either lost or never had a sense of humor - but then if I earned my keep/worth as an *oxymoron spoiler alert* elected public servant, I might lose my sense of humor too! |

An interesting concept and proposal but I would have to vote nay.As stated, the devise is not foolproof but that is not the sole basis for my nay vote. Some say we demand too little from our politicians,I say we demand far too much! This demand for "perfection" is the base alloy of the deceit we see among today's politicians. In a sense..we force them into posturing and deception.Yes..we want honesty..or at least we think we do.The best among us would never seek political office. Why?..they refuse to play the game! Who would set "The Base Line" on the lie detector???
I believe the best lie detector is the voter, the results will determine if the incumbent will receive another term. No..this method is also not entirely foolproof but like the politician, mistakes will always be made. We the people, with all of our imperfections, have chosen this system. The voter will in time, seperate the wheat from the chaff.

I just had an operation last year at this time to remove a mass from the left side of my heart. The appendage had formed its own pacemaker and as you can guess caused me many problems before the source was detected. I cannot adequately convey the embarrassment I have undergone over the years due to lie detector tests when they were required for employment. While mine is an extreme case, there are many people with slight to pronounced heart murmurs that cannot pass a lie detector test. And I have known many people throughout my employment history who just finished smoking a joint and a few hours later told the tester they had never smoked marijuana in their life! But, to answer your question regarding politicians: see section on habitual liars above.

Spencer,
There's a difference between truth and opinion...*S* Joe ~ saltwn, I'm sorry to hear about your medical maladies and troubling experiences with lie-detectors. As for your answer to my question regarding politicians: see the section on floors vs ceilings above. Joe ~ lackluster IMHO you're among the most attractive, intelligent and discerning Political Wrinkles readers/posters I've ever met. I paid $99.99 for a two-hand-held calculator in 1972! Not all politicians have cojones and some are women too! Willy Brown knew when to get in and when to get out and he got out while the gettin' was good...but then that pretty much sums up his whole political tenure. Joe |
