What happens in court is a totally different kettle of fish Mikey. Anyone, no matter how guilty they are of a crime, has the chance to get away with it once they're in court...

There has been plenty of officers upset that they did their jobs, just to watch the criminals walk out of court cause of a technicality/plea bargin or some juror/judge swallowing their sob story.

Your OT is about the officer's duties...Not the court's successes/failures.

The courtroom is the only place where the discrepancy should be happening.

That is the judges discretion, not the officers. Police officers are trained to enforce the law, not apply it in cases. There is a difference and they should respect that difference.

I just don't want every police officer in town to be at the station booking potheads when somebody decides to break into my house late one Friday night or when I call to report some drunken fool swerving all over a main thoroughfare.
Then change the law. But until the law is changed, smoking pot is just as illegal as breaking/entry or driving under the influence.

If I were a police officer, I would have the responsibility of enforcing all laws. I may not agree with all of the laws, but I would enforce them all. Marijuana laws included.

Same here...

I wonder how many accidents were avoided because a cop DIDN'T let some "minor pot smoker" go...

I personally don't agree with marijuana prohibitions. I think that it's a stupid waste of time and resources and that marijuana does less damage socially and physically than alcohol. Further, I would like to see marijuana taxed and regulated.

However, as a law enforcement officer, it is not my call to make these decision while on duty. It is the job of LEO's to enforce and to let the courts make the judgments.

If I find your registration expired yesterday I would tell you to fix it. If I saw your car broke down on the side of the road I would help you move it. Not write you a ticket. There are a hundred examples of the difference between what is the law and what is being a fellow citizen. WWAD. That is my reference to What Would Andy Do. Yeah from Mayberry. But I remember the episode where Barney had the whole town locked up by the time Andy got back. Barney had the law on his side but he was wrong.
