County declares emergency

Shawnee County Commission Chairman Vic Miller declared a county-wide emergency at 3 p.m. Saturday due to snow and high winds.

The declaration allows the county to access additional resources to battle the storm, Topeka city spokesman David Bevens said at a news conference Saturday.

More than 60 plows are working to clear roadways in the city and county, where heavy snowfall and strong winds have wreaked havoc on local commuters.

Bevens encouraged residents to stay off the streets and avoid traveling unless absolutely necessary. He said motorists leaving stalled and stuck vehicles behind on city streets is creating problems for city police officers.

"Everyone is encouraged to stay off the streets unless it is an emergency," Topeka police Lt. Scott Gilchrist said. "Vehicles are getting stuck and snow plows and emergency vehicles are unable to get through some streets due to abandoned vehicles.

Police advised residents to refrain from calling police for non-emergency situations.

Bevens said the city has adequate resources for the storm, but strong winds and drifting snow is making it difficult for road crews to keep city streets cleared.

"Crews will continue to work around the clock," Bevens said. "One of our goals is to get the residential streets plowed for folks to get to work on Monday. However, drifting is hindering the snow removal."
