Alcohol 'protects men's hearts'

Drinking alcohol every day cuts the risk of heart disease in men by more than a third, a major study suggests.

The Spanish research involving more than 15,500 men and 26,000 women found large quantities of alcohol could be even more beneficial for men.

Female drinkers did not benefit to the same extent, the study in Heart found.

Experts are critical, warning heavy drinking can increase the risk of other diseases, with alcohol responsible for 1.8 million deaths globally per year.

The study was conducted in Spain, a country with relatively high rates of alcohol consumption and low rates of coronary heart disease.

The research involved men and women aged between 29 and 69, who were asked to document their lifetime drinking habits and followed for 10 years.

Crucially the research team claim to have eliminated the "sick abstainers" risk by differentiating between those who had never drunk and those whom ill-health had forced to quit. This has been used in the past to explain fewer heart-related deaths among drinkers on the basis that those who are unhealthy to start with are less likely to drink.

But it is very bad for blood pressure which can lead to stroke if not heart attack.
One glass of wine or a beer, one mixed drink a day is supposed to be good for you. But more than that on a regular basis will damage your liver and pickle yer innards!

drinking large amounts of alcohol did nothing for my old man but make him a drunk and die at an early age. Sitting around guzzling booze can't be healthy for anyone!

Could this possibly explain why although I'm somewhere on the other side of 50 I have the heart of a 28 year old (according to my last stress test)?

Okay - so why do I have the mind of a 14 year old????

Gee, I'm on the other side of 50 also and my last stress test, ( a year and a half ago,) they told me I had the heart of an ox, they put no age on it. Is that good or bad? Now I'm curious.

I also heard ones that staring at women's breasts was good for men's hearts. I guess I am pretty healthy then! (Yes, I am a male chauvinist pig)
