D'man, you're right. They need to burn their hand to learn the stove is hot.

Well, not in the past week, but during this past gardening season I've learned:

1) My current garden location gets too much shade when the trees have full foliage
2) All the stuff I read about cucumbers dying if near a black walnut tree... is true
3) Broccoli needs like 3 square feet per plant
4) Zucchini plants are huge and need a ****load of space too.
5) Squash planted near corn will try to climb the corn
6) If you want enough string beans for a meal, you need to have several bean plants
7) Zucchini fruit grows really fast on the vine
8) Tomatoes ripen on the vine really fast
9) Bell peppers take forever to grow
10) Potatoes are hard to dig up, but it's really fun playing in the dirt
11) Carrots take forever to grow
12) Raspberries will take over your yard quickly

Ok, no doubt I will find some more words to add to this thread.
Unfortunately, she probably knows this but has to be ready in her own mind to make the changes - sometimes it takes a shock or a health disaster to push a person to action

It upsets me to know she is on about 5 a day, (or so she says, i think it may be more). She started to smoke when she started University last September.

I know from my work what cigarettes can do to type 2 diabetics. She is likely to get type 2 (my other daughter contracted it when she was 20 which is very young).

She was always the self-disciplined one, but now of course mixing with the Uni crowd she has tried cigarettes (and whatever else I don't want to know!), and is hooked.

Still, we can't control our adult kids like we can a child. It is only by experience we can foretell what our children think they are immune to, and of course at that age we all thought we were immune.

Life and life's experiences teaches us as we plod along.

No, we can't and I'm sure that is really hard to have to watch from the sidelines as a mother

I am used to it now. I use wet look gel or styling wax to accentuate the waves. I only wish it wasn't quite so short round my ears. The stylist recommended that cutting the hair round the ears would not suit me and she was right. I just have to wear earrings every time I go out to stop the style emasculating me!

What can I do. She is a clever girl academically, but has no insight into the danger of cigarettes.

I need to stop nagging her. I hope one day she realises I did try. The vascular and heart problems will be dreadful if she carries on and the sooner she gets type 2 the worse it will be for her if she doesn't stop.

It is a peer pressure thing and I thought she was above that, but hey ho, she wasn't.

As a former smoker, let me suggest that you do stop nagging her. Anytime anyone nagged me about smoking, all it did was make me want to smoke MORE. Sometimes because of a stress response and sometimes out of sheer spite. Quitting smoking is something the individual must WANT to do for themselves and must choose to do for themselves.

It has only been three days that I have known about it. I stated what diseases she will get and how tobacco affects diabetics. I could see she was shocked. I also told her she doesn't have diabetes now, but it will happen, hopefully not as young as my other daughter, and have to leave it to her. Peer pressure is a powerful influence and whilst her friends may not have diabetes in the family she must be aware of the risk she is taking. She knows now. I just have to let her get on with it.
