My older son works in telemarketing. He's been doing it for several years; he's probably one of the few people who actually enjoys it and has been fairly successful at it. He's apparently very good at it, and therefore makes decent money.

But in general, telemarketers are very low-paid and overworked individuals, who receive no benefits and have no job security, and who are drawn from the lowest echelons of society. They're people with no education or skills, who are willing to work for minimum wage plus whatever commissions they can make.

So, I know they're annoying; I used to hate them! But don't torment them too much, lol. It's not like they really want to be calling and harassing you. They're just trying to feed their families, like everyone else.

Call centres can be awful places to work in.

Many years ago I was a telephone market researcher. I enjoyed it too apart from the end of the campaign where we had to only get certain social classes/ages/gender. Then it was tough to meet the target.

I was promoted to spot-checking to check the researchers had not made up their respondent's answers, so the poor responded was not only disturbed on a Sunday morning once, but by me a couple of hours later. No wonder marketers/researchers get a bad name.

Here in the UK a person who works in market research should not answer any MR questions asked, so if I get a call I just say I work in market research (even though I don't) and they don't go further.

I used to blow a whistle till I met some young people who were all working as telemarketers till they could find something better. They related to me things people had done to them in the course of a week. I felt sorry for them.
Incidentally there's a number you can call here that will take them off your cell phone or rather put your cell phone on a don't call list. Here in the states anyway.

There is here too, as well as one for stopping junk mail. There was an associated video to the right of one of the clips I posted above to stop telemarketing calls, but I didn't want to post it as I can't verify its validity.

I think they have a questionnaire that asks if you were rooting for Whoville or the Grinch and you have to answer the way they want...

Jim Florentine and Don Jamieson from 'That Metal Show' have a series of comedy CDs called 'Terrorizing Telemarketers' with some funny stuff.

what I use to do is answer the phone and when they started their spiel I would ask them to hold for a minute. I would then lay the receiver down and let them wait and wait thus causing them to have a bigger phone bill.

I found this on a Facebook link. Personally I am not sure it would work so easily because it may have worked with this particular telemarketer, but how could the others have been informed, unless this one took his name off the list and it passes on to the other organisations as well. There is some truth in it as I always mention that I work in telephone marketing when I get a call, or in telephone market research, and I rarely get calls.

Chuggers annoy me greatly though so when they accost me in the high street I just say I don't have a bank account.

chugger

nouninformal
plural noun: chuggers
1.
a person who approaches passers-by in the street asking for donations or subscriptions to a particular charity.

It Worked To His Credit
TELEMARKETING | JOHNSON CITY, TN, USA | EMPLOYEES, LAZY/UNHELPFUL
(One of my best friends has been having trouble with telemarketers calling his cell phone for almost a year now. No matter how many times he tells them that he’s not interested or that he’s on the national ‘Do Not Call’ registry, they keep calling back. One day the two of us are at a bar, and he gets a call from an unknown number.)

Friend: “Oh no, not another one.”

Me: “Hand me your phone. I’ll take care of it.”

(He hands me his phone, which I then answer.)

Telemarketer: “Hello, may I speak with a Mr. [Name]?”

Me: “You’re talking to him.”

Telemarketer: “Hi, I’m with [Resort Chain]. I’m calling to give you information about—”

Me: “Ma’am, I’m 16, single, and don’t have a credit card.”

Telemarketer: “Have a nice day.” *hangs up*

(My friend stares at me dumbfounded as I hand him his phone back.)

Friend: “Why did you say all of that?”

Me: “I used to work for a call center. Being unqualified takes you off the list faster than the national registry does.”

(It’s been three years, and he hasn’t had a call since.)
