Default Why are some people party poopers?

I mean, I just don't get it. Why do some people just want to squash everyone elses fun?

We have an individual here at work who bitches and moans about the ping pong table, bitches and moans about anyone doing anything fun. Today someone ran around early this morning and screwed with stuff on our desks for April Fools. (unhooked wireless mouse receivers, unplugged keyboards, removed keyboards, messed with our chairs, etc, etc) Everyone had a good laugh when they came in and saw their offices. I thought for sure it was my irish colleague so I called him a ****ing paddy, everyone laughs with each other, everyone is pointing fingers at others.

The one gal though, well, she pitched a fit.

I mean... why? Things are jovial and then one person... ONE person sours the whole thing. I just don't get it.

A couple of weeks ago we were having a brief meeting and we were all standing around with glasses of wine or bottles of beer. One gal got there late and my boss asks if she'd like a drink. She looks scathingly around at everyone and says, "Only if it's NON alcoholic." We all roll our eyes, but my boss says "Sure! We have some soda and..." and before he can finish she says, "and UN sweetened, and NOT carbonated" So my boss shows her to the water fountain. (I **** you not) But she wouldn't drink the water unless it was filtered.

I dunno, I just don't understand why one person could be surrounded by people who are laughing and having a good time and then go out of their way to put a stop to it by being a ****ing twat. It seems like in every office I've been in, there's always ONE like that. I don't understand what they get out of it.

You're right, in my last job I had one of those. It's a mixture of a bad personality, an unfortunate physical appearance, and not getting laid regularly, (the latter brought about by the former two). Word to the wise, NEVER make an effort to try to please this individual... as your unfortunate boss sadly found out, it is IMPOSSIBLE. Just avoid as much as possible and hope she isn't good at what she does and her attitude gets her fired sooner rather than later, .

I get the feeling she won't be there long.

When someone dosen't mesh with the majority personality-wise, they usually find the exit door on their own, and if not, bosses will assist.

Could just be a bad upbringing.

There's just some people who are hell-bent on being miserable humans. Why? They don't feel comfortable with who they are, and are searching for their place in the world.

She's actually been here for years. She's been shuffled around department to department until she finally ended up in ours. In our department, she's forced to deal with fewer people face to face and now I'm her pseudo-supervisor. Sort of.

I don't think they CAN fire her, thanks to all the ****ing rules and regulations about doing so. But I have no idea why she continues to work somewhere that she obviously despises.

But then again, I can't imagine she'd be happy anywhere.

My great-grandmother was like that. There was no pleasing the woman. In my 36 years of knowing her, I don't recall ever seeing her smile. EVER. It didn't matter what happened or what you did, she would bitch. If she asked you to do something, and you did it, she would bitch that you did it. Most everyone knows someone like this, either through family or work. I've just never understood it. I get in MOODS like that on occasion, but dear lord... to live that way? Ugh.

I've always studied psychology off and on and I've just never been able to figure out this kind of behavior. I guess maybe it does have something to do with being the center of attention and controlling the situation. But why not just join in on the fun?!

I believe it's a combination of conditioning (they had someone like that deeply involved in their life) and a form of sociopathy that formed because of the constant negative conditioning.

Simply put: bad upbringing.
