Technically, this is correct.

But since we did pay into the system in this regard, Medicare and Social Security cannot reasonably be defined as mere welfare.

mere?

all of them are social programs to help humans in times of need. so is fema. so is the veteran's hospital. so is blm a welfare program. what's wrong with that? welfare is something governments should strive for. the welfare of its citizens
farm programs are welfare, and tax forgiveness in big or little businesses is also. school is a program for the welfare of us all so kids dont leech the system but make themselves into contributing citizens.

Just about all of Europe, plus Canada, may certainly be defined as welfare states. The operative question is this: Do we really wish for the US to transmute itself into a modern welfare state, just as these countries have done?

And I will reiterate my point: Social Security and Medicare cannot reasonably be defined as welfare, since the recipients thereof have already paid taxes for these programs.

And there is nothing wrong with that. We just happen to think that everyone should be able to get the same socialized healthcare system that PjOhns wife gets. Yes the taxes might go up, but it will still be cheaper than co-pays and deductibles etc.
I cannot speak to your personal situation but even the so-called studies claiming Medicare for all will reduce healthcare costs generate savings estimates by fixing prices at Medicare reimbursement rates. Price fixing by government works to reduce availability which leads to reduction in overall health care spending.

The generally accepted wisdom proclaims emergency room care as the most expensive form of health care. Using new Medicaid enrollees from Obamacare we see their ER room utilization increase. The Medicaid patient has no worry about cost, just like the Medicare for all patient.
