GOP wrestles with soaring deductibles in healthcare bill

Quote:
BY JESSIE HELLMANN - 07/22/17

Senate Republicans have run into another problem in passing their ObamaCare replacement bill: it could increase deductibles by thousands of dollars, potentially alienating moderates who are already skeptical of the bill.
An analysis released Thursday by the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office concluded that a single policyholder purchasing a standard benchmark plan under the GOP bill could face a deductible of $13,000 in 2026. Under current law, an individual making $56,800 would have a deductible of $5,000, while someone making $26,500 would have an $800 deductible. Higher deductibles is the trade-off that Republicans made when they decided that lowering premiums would be a top priority for their legislation; plans with lower premiums generally have higher deductibles.
The McConnell GOP is touting lower premiums, which is in itself a good thing, but they totally ignore a basic economic reality which demands higher deductibles in exchange for lower premiums. What you end up with is front-loaded affordability married with back-loaded unaffordability. What good is healthcare insurance if your up-front-out-of-pocket costs are prohibitive when you need it?

When Trump met last week at the White House with all 52 GOP Senators, he told them - paraphrasing - "Get a healthcare bill on my desk and I will sign it." Now think about that statement. Trump is basically promising to sign any healthcare legislation the GOP forwards to the Oval Office sight unseen. This president doesn't care a whit about healthcare for Americans. All that he cares about is a political win. The first significant legislative notch in his presidential sixshooter.

Democrats DO NOT wrestle with soaring deductibles at any time after they voted for ObamaCare...A law that was signed with the promise that Americans' health care payments will DECREASE...

Suddenly OCare is the Republican's problem and fault.

Where is the Democrat fix?

It is time for the conservatives to face it. If the right had a functional healthcare plan we would have seen it by now, they got nuthin, they know they got nuthin...and it seems only the Trump believers still believe Turmp words. Great health care for everyone cheaper...I, and the rest of sane Americans, are waiting.

NO it is time you realized how badly the left has destroyed our health care system trying to buy votes with it...

If the left did not have to buy it's support from the American people with free bee's like health care we would not have this problem to fix.

The left broke the system, and now it is time for them to pay for it, they own this mess the made.

So fuq the left wing, and all those to stupid to understand we can not afford free health care for all.

Regards, Kirk

While I agree with the majority of what you've said here, one thing that everybody seems to treat like an elephant stuffed in the closet, is the actual costs of healthcare that have escalated at astounding rates over the last 20 years (or so).

Providing health insurance 'for everybody' is going to be astronomical on one end or another if you (generic) don't address the underlying costs. It's time for regulations on the health industry (and I believe you know how much that pains me to say it) and remove the government involvement other than regulation.

UHC is basically the government acting as a 'insurer', who collects money up front, decides if you are deemed worthy of certain treatments based only on fiscal impact. In addition, the ability to receive treatment at your expense is curtailed and in certain cases, not permitted (Charlie Gard) because others may seek to do the same, and that would have a detrimental psychological impact on the members of the UHC group.

Is that truly what you want?

Do you have any links that aren't from fake news sites to back up these false allegations?

Do you get sarcasm? Healthcare costs have increased drastically for decades. Before Obama millions and millions were uninsured and accessed the system in the least efficient ways possible. What part of that do you need to see a study about?

I cannot speak for everyone else, but before Obamacare, my premiums were about $60 a month and my deductible was around $500. Now my premiums are around $300 a month and my deductible is $9,000. That is quite a jump and cannot be pinned solely on inflation.
