Default Union troubled by Eagle Scout project in Allentown

One of the multiple reasons why so many believe unions have gone beyond their original goals and now are just thugs...

Union troubled by Eagle Scout project in Allentown

In pursuit of an Eagle Scout badge, Kevin Anderson, 17, has toiled for more than 200 hours hours over several weeks to clear a walking path in an east Allentown park.

Little did the do-gooder know that his altruistic act would put him in the cross hairs of the city's largest municipal union.

Nick Balzano, president of the local Service Employees International Union, told Allentown City Council Tuesday that the union is considering filing a grievance against the city for allowing Anderson to clear a 1,000-foot walking and biking path at Kimmets Lock Park.

"We'll be looking into the Cub Scout or Boy Scout who did the trails," Balzano told the council.

Balzano said Saturday he isn't targeting Boy Scouts. But given the city's decision in July to lay off 39 SEIU members, Balzano said "there's to be no volunteers." No one except union members may pick up a hoe or shovel, plant a flower or clear a walking path.

Kudos to the eagle scout.

If those laid off union members want to volunteer to clean the paths no one is stopping them.

Wouldn't want to keep the workers from doing the work that they aren't planning on doing anyways...............

In order for the work to get done by the union they first would have to get at least 8 members together, then find six trucks, two tractors, five lawn mowers, eight shovels, brooms, rakes, and various other equipment. They then would have to have a meeting to organize how the days work would proceed. Then, when they arrive at the site two members would be dispatched for coffee and donuts, while the remaining 6 stood around talking about last nights episode of American Idol or Survivor. When the donuts and coffee arrive it would be declared a two hour break and the men would climb into the trucks for a nap, all the while leaving the the tracks and tractors idling thus wasting gas. Five hours later when every one was finely awake the work would begin. One man would grab a shovel and walk around while the others stood there leaning on their shovels and rakes talking about the latest nude photos of Ms. Prejean. When the first man finally arrives back the group realizes that they only have about an hour or so left to work and they then get into the trucks, tractors and take all the other equipment back to where it belongs. They get back to the garage a half hour early and then pat themselves on the back for a job well done!

The union IS SEIU... so there's a good chance they'd also be comparing their stolen IDs.

I agree with you 100%. They only drive up the cost of the goods sold and do not provide a competitive labor market. Their orgination, which was the sweatshops of yesteryear, they were needed. The labor laws in place now make them redundant.

I do not believe that they can file a case against a civic non-profit organization, but they are welcome to try.

I have had my share of dealings with Unions when I worked in NJ.... how very very sad those organizations were: demanding that a carpenter union person be paid for 8 hours work when they were only necessary for 4, plus travel, and they were not even qualified to do the work that was needed on a video shoot set. The guy stood around and watched our boys (non-union) do the work.

In addition to the wages per hour, you are also required to pay additional funds to the Union, let's call it The Widows and Orphans Fund, for the PRIVELEGE of having a Union person there.
