Default Inmates come to the rescue of detention deputy

HILLSBOROUGH COUNTY (Bay News 9) -- The Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office has released surveillance video of an inmate attacking a detention deputy inside a jail pod.

On Monday at 12:45 p.m., the sheriff's office says 24-year-old Douglas Burden, an inmate at the Orient Road Jail, brutally attacked detention deputy Kenneth Moon, 64.

Moon, who was inside the pod by himself with 62 inmates, was clearly outnumbered. He is pictured here after the attack.

Deputies say Burden charged Moon, put him in a choke hold and began strangling him.

Other inmates who witnessed the attack rushed to the deputy's aid. During the struggle, one inmate took the deputy's radio and called for emergency assistance.

"Thankfully, a number of inmates in seven-delta intervened and came to the deputy's rescue," said HCSO Col. Jim Previtera. "We believe (that) saved the deputy's life."

Previtera says he's not sure why Burden attacked Moon but he has no doubt about why the other inmates came to his deputy's rescue.

"The response of the other inmates in this case I think speaks volumes as to the fact that we treat these men and women that are held in our facilities with a lot of respect," Previtera said.

Previtera says he also thanked those inmates in person. He's also sending the inmates' attorneys a letter of thanks from the sheriff that they can use in their court cases.

Burden was arrested in March on DUI and drug charges. He's now facing an additional charge of battery on a law enforcement officer.

Since Previtera took over the Hillsborough County jails about a year ago, he says inmate attacks on deputies are down almost 60-percent.

Wonder if anyone would come to Sherrif Joe's aid under the same circumstances?

I was actually referring to his more humiliating practices towards inmates...

Pink underwear
One of Arpaio's most visible public relations actions was the introduction of pink underwear, which the Maricopa County Sheriff's website cites as being "world famous."[28] Arpaio subsequently started to sell customized pink boxers (with the Maricopa County Sheriff's logo and "Go Joe") as a fund-raiser for Sheriff's Posse Association. Despite allegations of misuse of funds received from these sales, Arpaio declined to provide an accounting for the money [29].

Arpaio's success in gaining press coverage with the pink underwear resulted in him extending the use of the color. He introduced pink handcuffs, using the event to promote his book, Sheriff Joe Arpaio, America's Toughest Sheriff.[30]

Of course if the inmates don't run to his aid, it may be that they're just too weak from those $1 a day meal Joe feeds them, .

I thought it was obvious the point of the post was that when people are treated with respect they will act like decent human beings. I couldn't help pointing out in the process that your hero Sherriff Joe is an arse, .

That is kind of surprising. Maybe these guys will get an extra pudding cup with their dinner. Course they will probably catch hell from the other inmates.

Sheriff Joe treats his inmates with the respect they deserve, shame on them for breaking the law.

Oh and BTW, the inmates meals cost less than a dollar, but Joe's dogs meals cost more than a buck as it should be!

Hey guys Joe has plenty of problems.. He has done a great job. I've seen his and the inmates interviewed...
Sure the pink is their worst complaint.... But thats it. They realize the cost for the crime now...

Look at how many come back to his jail in the sand... That should speak volumes and shut the mouths of anyone that feels he isn't doing his job as elected to do.
