Most of them seem pretty selfish to me.

Perhaps you know of other reasons that are not so selfish.
  • Some have children because they believe it brings meaning and purpose to their life.
  • Some have children because the birth control failed.
  • Some have children so there will be someone to care about them in old age
  • Some have children from narcissism; they want to mold someone in their own image.
  • Some want sons to carry on the family name after the parents die.
  • Some have children because they simply love children and want someone to care for. (Much like some of us keep pets)
  • Some have children because they think that's what you do when you grow up;spouse, family or friends may tell them that is what they are supposed to do.
  • Some have a child in a misguided effort to hold on to a failing relationship
  • Some have a child because they feel unloved and believe their own child will have to love them unconditionally.
  • Some fear leaving this life with nothing to show for it and have children to leave a mark on the world.
  • And in addition to all of these reasons is the universal reason, biological imperative; it is an instinct to reproduce.
You went a bit further with it than I did, but it illustrates what I was talking about. Thank you.

Considering this, it IS selfish in that regard.
I don't get what you're saying here at all.

[list][*]Some have children because they believe it brings meaning and purpose to their life.
[*]Some have children because the birth control failed.
How is allowing a human to live vs aborting it selfish?

Quote:
[*]Some have children so there will be someone to care about them in old age
I've never met anyone who had children for this reason. Children don't owe their parents anything and there is no guarantee that any child will care for you when you're older.

Quote:

I don't know if continuing the species is "selfish" per say. Love of humanity and all.

Quote:
[*]Some want sons to carry on the family name after the parents die.
It's hard to guarantee you have a son.

Quote:
[*]Some have children because they simply love children and want someone to care for. (Much like some of us keep pets)
Since when is wanting to care for another living thing selfish?

Quote:

Doing something because you feel you have a duty to do it isn't exactly selfish. Perhaps misguided but not selfish.

Quote:
[*]Some have a child in a misguided effort to hold on to a failing relationship
This one I'd agree is selfish.

Quote:
[*] Some have a child because they feel unloved and believe their own child will have to love them unconditionally.
This is somewhat stupid and again there's no guarantee your child will always love you.

How anyone can say having children is "selfish" is beyond me. If anything selfish generally goes out the window when you have children and you get a big lesson in sacrifice.

Because having children is somewhat natural. It's a logical step in adulthood. You reach a point where you think you've learned tons and you want to pass that wisdom on to someone else. Of course in reality you don't know jack $hit and that's what the kid's gonna teach you but you don't know that going in. Children bring you out of yourself. Most parents will sacrifice a great deal for their children. Suddenly your own well being comes second to the well being of your child. I don't see "selfishness" as being a big part of parenting.

If you don't want children then clearly you shouldn't have them. But if you're gonna spout off like a holier than thou a$$ claiming you're not having children in order to save the world while the rest of us are selfish breeders hell bent on destroying the planet you're gonna get laughed at.

It is not humans vs, nature because we are part of nature. Human beings have to have a reasonably clean environment in order to live. But because we have so much greater intelligence than the other animals, we have the ability to alter our environment much more drastically than they do. And the more of us there are, the more we alter the environment.

If some people choose not to reproduce the human race is not going to be wiped out.
The point I was trying to make is that if everyone thought the way these people did the human race would die off.

Look around you. There are always going to be those whose drive to reproduce is in overdrive.

They will more than make up for the relatively few people who choose not to or who cannot reproduce at all.

Personally, I would be more prone to call someone who has 6 or 8 or more children wacky. What the hell is that about?
Again the point I was trying to make was that if everyone thought the way these people did we as a human race would be gone and I have no idea what is up with people that have 6 or 8 kids I have 2 and that is more than enough for me.

I think that most people have kids partially because of a biological imperative and partially becaue they, emotionally, want a pert of themselves for the future. Thee are other reasons, of course, but I think that those are the main two.

If people had babies for sake of the person that the baby would be, then they would have as many children as possible.
Not if you can't afford them, this is usually the reason people stop.

Understand that I am not evaluating the word 'selfish' as a negative thing. I an evaluating is as 'done for self' without other connotation. People have kids because they WANT kids.

Again though you say people have kids because the WANT them but why do they WANT them? Yes I had kids because I wanted them but I have reasons I wanted them not just because.

Well they are all selfish reasons and ones that from at least the people I know have NEVER said one of.

I have children and I had them in the hopes that they will add good to this world.

How noble. You are the only person that I have ever encountered who stated that was his/her reason for having children.

As I said, the reasons That I gave above were gleaned from conversations and reading. Most people seem to have children for selfish reasons.
