Emails show high-powered teachers union pressured CDC to change school reopening guidance

The American Federation of Teachers successfully lobbied the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to change its guidance on school reopenings, emails show.

As the CDC was preparing to issue guidance that it was safe to reopen schools fully in February, emails obtained through a Freedom of Information Act request revealed that the AFT was behind the scenes, lobbying the agency and the Biden administration to adjust the guidance to make it friendlier to school closures and hybrid learning.

“Thank you again for Friday’s rich discussion about forthcoming CDC guidance and for your openness to the suggestions made by our president, Randi Weingarten, and the AFT,” AFT Senior Director for Health Issues Kelly Trautner wrote in one of the emails.

“We were able to review a copy of the draft guidance document over the weekend and were able to provide some initial feedback to several staff this morning about possible ways to strengthen the document,” Trautner continued. “We believe our experiences on the ground can inform and enrich thinking around what is practicable and prudent in future guidance documents.”

In later emails, Trautner thanked CDC Director Dr. Rochelle Walensky for her “commitment to partnership” with the union as the CDC neared the release of updated guidance.

“We are immensely grateful for your genuine desire to earn our confidence and your commitment to partnership,” Trautner said in an email to Walensky in February.

The CDC was preparing to update its guidance to reflect its belief that schools could fully reopen, regardless of community spread of COVID-19. But the AFT successfully lobbied the CDC to add a line reading, “In the event of high community-transmission results from a new variant of SARS-CoV-2, a new update of these guidelines may be necessary” while allowing teachers “who have documented high-risk conditions or who are at increased risk for … COVID-19” to work from home.

The CDC guidance stopped short of calling for all schools to reopen, instead opting for color-coded charts that recommended that districts in “red” zones with “high” community spread keep their middle and high schools closed to in-person learning.

“Today, the CDC met fear of the pandemic with facts and evidence,” the AFT said in a statement following the updated CDC guidance.

The new guidance came as the CDC and Biden administration worked to assure people that instructions being released from Washington would “follow the science,” assurance some skeptics now doubt because of the back channel dealing between the CDC and AFT.

“What seems strange to me here is there would be this very intimate back and forth, including phone calls where this political group gets to help formulate scientific guidance for our major public health organization in the United States,” said Dr. Monica Gandhi, a professor of medicine at the University of California, San Francisco, who called the emails “very, very troubling.”

Walensky had also insisted the updated guidance was free from political influence.

“I can assure you that this is free from political meddling,” Walensky said when the guidance was released.

Meanwhile, the AFT defended its role in shaping the updated CDC guidance.

“The AFT represents 1.7 million educators, healthcare professionals and public employees who spent the last 14 months serving on the front lines of the COVID-19 pandemic. So naturally, we have been in regular touch with the agencies setting policy that affect their work and lives, including the CDC,” said AFT spokeswoman Oriana Korin.

And those on the left wonder why nobody trusts the CDC. They are NOT following the science, they are playing patsy to their big money donors. The head of the CDC should be fired immediately and the new director should clean house. It won't happen, but it should.

Wait, they consulted with teachers while developing guidelines for how best to safely reopen schools? Only in the twisted minds of right-wingers is this some sort of scandal.

Looks to me like they were consulting union leaders not teachers. But that's beside the point, I wouldn't consult a teacher or union official on a public health issues any more than I would consult an airline pilot about teaching methods. Only in the twisted minds of leftists does consulting union leaders about infectious diseases make sense.

That's the point...

Every time the CDC makes a statement, LiberalLand yelled, "It's all about the SCIENCE!!!!...You have to listen to the CDC because they're ONLY scientific and nothing political!!!!...They don't listen to NON-SCIENTIFIC groups!!!!!!"...

These emails show it's all bullsh*t...Many of us knew this, anyway...This is just confirmation...

The teachers union leadership is the authorized representative of teachers. That’s the whole idea of a union.

And if the CDC were working on safety/health guidelines for flying planes, I would hope that they would consult with pilot representatives. Same thing with schools and teachers. This is a fake “scandal.”

Bullsh*t!...

If the CDC was working on the lack of gun safety and its effect on health and was getting their guidance from the NRA, your head would explode...

If the CDC was working on pollution and its effects on health and was getting their guidance from the oil industry, you'd lose your voice from screaming...

Here's a question for ya...

How many Democrat governors and mayors have "received guidance" or "listened to lobbying" from any restaurant associations?

How many of them have "received guidance" or "listened to lobbying" from small business associations before their policies forced many of them to close?

Did Biden "receive guidance" or "listen to lobbying" from the Pipeliners Union before he whacked the XL pipeline 14 seconds into his term?

Equating pollution regulation for the oil industry to guidelines for healthy operation for teachers in public schools is remarkably stupid, even for this forum.

Do you think Biden consulted the Pilot's Union before announcing mask orders for plane passengers?

Consulting teachers union leadership on public heath issues is nothing more than pandering.
