I've not been able to find what the time lapse was between being tested, and finding out it was positive. If it was a matter of a couple days, I see no reason why he couldn't have delayed his trip to the gym, or meeting with others.

If the test was being treated as a low-level maybe, and a week or so from test to diagnosis, I could give some leeway on attending meetings.
