Democrats Demand End of Trump Tax Cuts — or Else No Infrastructure Funding

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) said Monday he would not support a national gas tax increase unless President Donald Trump is willing to repeal some of his administration’s tax cuts.
Ahead of a meeting with Trump on Tuesday on a potential infrastructure deal, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) and Schumer wrote a letter to Trump, saying that an infrastructure deal must be “comprehensive and include clean energy and resiliency priorities.”

Schumer and Pelosi said that the deal must “go beyond transportation and into broadband, water, energy, schools, housing and other initiatives. We must also invest in resiliency and risk mitigation of our current infrastructure to deal with climate change.”

The Democrat leadership’s letter arises as Trump economic adviser Larry Kudlow said Monday that President Trump continues to mull whether to back a federal gas tax increase to pay for an infrastructure package.

Schumer reportedly will not back a gas tax increase unless Trump can undo the cost through repealing some of the GOP tax cuts.

One source close to Schumer told Reuters, “Unless President Trump considers undoing some of the 2017 tax cuts for the wealthy, Schumer won’t even consider a proposal from the president to raise the gas tax, of which the poor and working people would bear the brunt.”

Influential D.C. establishment groups such as the U.S. Chamber of Commerce and the AFL-CIO continue to push for a gas tax increase despite conservative and progressive opposition to such a proposal. Many Americans oppose a gas tax increase because it remains regressive, meaning that it will impact low-income Americans the most.

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) said that he believes that many Americans approve of an infrastructure project; however, “nobody on either side has stepped up with a credible proposal to pay for it.”

“I’m all for taking it up once the president and Democrats, everybody says OK, here’s how we’re going to pay for it. As soon as that magically appears I think we have a way forward,” McConnell added.

I don't know about anyone else but I netted $200.00 a month from Trump's tax cuts.

I don't know the dollar figure, but between my wife and I, we are paying less in payroll taxes and even got a refund this year from the Fed instead of paying in anywhere between $2000 and $3000 like we have for the past few years.

But as I am not a part of a targeted and favored group for the Democrats (white male with a job), my well being is not their concern. In their eyes, I should be paying in all my earnings to support the crack head mom with 8 children from 6 - 15 different men.

But all of that aside, wasn't Obama's stimulus supposed to fix our roads and bridges? If I remember correctly, that was the big selling point. I know that the labor unions made out pretty good on that deal, but not much else was done with all of that money aside from big payouts to failing companies like Solindra, much of which ultimately found it's way back into the campaign coffers of prominent Democrats.

Headline reads Trump tax cuts, but Chucky's and Nancy's issue seems to be environmental issues.

Having said that, it doesn't matter if Chucky supports or not. He's the minority leader. Nancy has the better argument, but she too doesn't have the votes to override the Senate or the president's veto.

I guess I'm ignorant but what are "resiliency priorities"?

True, nearly a trillion bucks.

Ironically, they should be Conservative words but it's used by Liberals...

"Resiliency priorities" are programs/structures that block/prevent damage...

A perfect example would be a wall on the residential side of a beach that protects housing and buildings against extreme weather such as a tidal rush...

The problem is tat Social Justice Warriors have co-opted that phrase and turned it into programs that are nothing more than slush funds for wealth distribution...:yes :(

What tax hikes are you talking about? I can't speak for everyone, but my taxes were LOWERED, meaning that I pay less in taxes AFTER the tax cut. And everyone that I know that discusses these things experienced the same thing. I know of no one who's taxes were raised by the tax cuts.

Can anyone point to where the Obama "Stimulus" money went? I know they spent a lot on signs 'cause they went up everywhere.

What tax hikes?

BTW, many of the "unfortunate" now, fortunately, have a job.

As for the middle class, it has never seen a better time. For the first time in decades, wages are rising and opportunities for better employment abound. Out of work welders and carpenters can stop delivering pizza's and Jimmy Johns, and get high paid steady employment.

This more so in the red states than the blue. Who's fault is that?
