Default ‘Cost Plus 50%:’ Trump Wants Hosts of US Troops to Pay a Premium

I think this is a great idea! Previous administrations have forced US taxpayers to fund the defense of other countries who have done little for their own defense, and it's time for these countries to pay for our aid.

Quote:
President Trump’s long-standing stance that overseas hosts of US troops are not paying enough for them always seemed like it was about defraying costs of America’s vast overseas presence. Indications are now that Trump believes the US can turn a profit on it.

Instead of just demanding that nations pay more of the cost of the US military’s presence in their country, Trump is now insisting on “cost plus 50.” To be specific, the administration wants 100% of the cost of US troop hosting to be covered by the other nation, and another 50% given to the US on top of that for the privilege of US troops being there. https://news.antiwar.com/2019/03/08/...ium-over-cost/
Given the fact that we've spent billions to defend other countries it would be nice to recoup some of that.

The article goes on to say that some nations won't be able to pay this. That's fine; then they can pay for their own defense and leave the US taxpayers out of it.

I imagine a few countries would say it's not feasible and ask that our bases be removed from their soil altogether...

Some bases exist for intelligence and recon measures...Losing them in some area wouldn't cause a ripple , but in some other areas they could be vital...They should be looked at on a case-by-case basis...

And another point. Having our troops paid for by foreign countries makes them mercenaries.

this is a humanity relationship not an economic one. if they pay for the defense or in the case where it also benefits us half the cost that would be great. We don't however want to become mercenaries. their stories never end well.

of course they should be looked at case by case.
even in what their payment would be - which could turn out not to be money.
clearly we should be getting something in return.
but a one size fits all cost plus 50% is probably not the best way to go about it.
i suppose if that’s where the bargaining starts that’s one thing. but i’m guessing that’s not where it’ll end up.
