Alabama newspaper editor calls on KKK to lynch Democrats

The opinion piece ran in his print-only newspaper, the Democrat-Reporter, last Thursday, Goodloe Sutton confirmed on Tuesday.

He said Democrats were going to raise taxes and that the KKK should hang them and raid Washington DC.

Alabama lawmakers have called for Sutton to resign.

The KKK is one of the oldest white supremacy groups in the US, formed just after the civil war. The group was behind many of the lynchings, rapes and violent attacks on African Americans in the 1900s.

The editorial began garnering attention online after students from Auburn University in Auburn, Alabama, tweeted photographs of the article.

Sutton could not be immediately reached for comment on the matter.

He was once a celebrated journalist, commended for his ethics by other news outlets - including the New York Times and American Journalism Review.

What did the editorial say?
A short editorial piece published without a byline on 14 February was entitled: "Klan needs to ride again."

"Time for the Ku Klux Klan to night ride again," the article said, referencing the KKK's terrorising raids through black communities.

"Democrats in the Republican Party and Democrats are plotting to raise taxes in Alabama... This socialist-communist ideology sounds good to the ignorant, the uneducated, and the simple-minded people."

"Seems like the Klan would be welcome to raid the gated communities up there."

"If we could get the Klan to go up there and clean out DC we'd all been better off," he said. "We'll get the hemp ropes out, loop them over a tall limb and hang all of them."

"It's not calling for the lynchings of Americans. These are socialist-communists we're talking about."

Sutton also told the paper he did not believe the Klan was a violent organisation.

"They didn't kill but a few people. The Klan wasn't violent until they needed to be."

Also this story ran in the Montgomery Advertiser.

What in the world is happening?

addendum

from the MA, who spoke with an African American barber who lives in Linden, which is located about 100 miles due west of Montgomery near the Mississippi border...

"People usually say we don’t know any better, we’re country bumpkins," Coleman said. "And if you’re black and live here, people think you don’t have a problem with racism. Otherwise, they say you should just move."

Coleman, born and raised in the area, owns a barber shop and has no plans to leave. He said it's not uncommon for customers in his barber shop to discuss the latest Sutton editorial, and some people think he's "trolling." But Coleman said whether the editor is truly calling for violence or simply trying to stir up trouble, the behavior needs to be "called out."

"It's different now because of the climate we're in," Coleman said. "He's calling for that against politicians or D.C., and I would hate for something to morph out of that. You can't come back from that."

If in truth, the man is a moron. Considering he owns a newspaper, he should have a glimmer of understanding what such a piece would do.

Hope he doesn't end up owning what he's printed.....

And the local press (rightly so) is taking action against this retard...

Alabama press group censures Goodloe Sutton over KKK editorial, suspends Democrat-Reporter

Quote:
The Alabama Press Association’s Board of Directors has voted to censure Goodloe Sutton, the newspaper publisher who penned an editorial calling for the revival of the Ku Klux Klan.

The APA confirmed to AL.com it had also suspended the membership of The Democrat-Reporter, which printed the editorial on Feb. 14.

Under its bylaws, members will be allowed to address the question of expelling the newspaper at its next membership meeting. Today’s actions are believed to be the first time the group has censured a member.

Calls to The Democrat-Reporter seeking comment on the APA move went unanswered.

The APA is the state’s newspaper trade association, representing 24 daily newspapers and 99 non-daily newspapers, as well as more than 100 associate members.

Earlier in the day, Auburn University’s Journalism Advisory Council voted to revoke Sutton’s community journalism award while the University of Southern Mississippi removed him from its Journalism and Mass Communications Hall of Fame.

The moves come after Sutton published an editorial calling for the white supremacist group to return because “Democrats in the Republican Party and Democrats are plotting to raise taxes in Alabama.” Sutton later told the Montgomery Advertiser if the Klan could “clean up D.C., we’d all been better off.”
