my take on it overall is that Bernie could have... probably would have... beaten Trump if he hadn't been robbed of the nomination by Hillary and the DNC last election.
He was riding a big wave and he was fresh, complaining about all of the right things and promising to give away free stuff.

But it seems to me that Bernie is a bit tarnished up now, he's "had to" compromise with his own corrupt party, and agree with the some of the crazier new comers and with the democrat establishment hacks in to many areas. So he's not looking like a real agent for change anymore just another party politician. At least to those uncommitted folks who were looking for honest and real gov't renewal of some kind.

Also many people stayed home and didn't vote for either Trump or Hillary.
(my hand goes up). But many politically uncommitted folks voted for Trump for change but a boatload of those people have been disillusioned and won't vote for him again. Also the Democrats in general are just looking crazier and Crazier to most Americans, I don't think most people are ready to go much further left at this point, it's gotten to weird and nasty.

But I think Bernie is sane and smart enough to rhetorically mop the floor with Trump in debates.
But not necessarily win enough votes for it.
Being right (or making better points) and winning arguments doesn't mean people change their minds. (Anyone here married?)

Then there's the amount of irrational hate many on the left have for Trump. they'll do everything to smear and get out the vote against him. But that blind rage could backfire on them like it has with Russia.

So bottom line i think Bernie stands a chance against Trump but not a big one.
Trump is moving on inertia now and people are at least use to him, even if they don't like him. and the country hasn't fallen off a cliff as the left predicted. (similar to the rights wild predictions of Obama's "destroying the country" in his 1st 4 years that that never materialized.)
We aren't all dead, or in a full on depression or in a nuclear war.
People kinda like stability and the familiar even if it's a bit distasteful.
Women will stay with a bad husband rather than leave with the new guy becasue... it's devil you know.

So baring some major Trump missteps or a clear new contender with a lot of charisma and money.
i suspect we'll see Trump another 4 years... by the skin of his teeth and low but faithful turn out.

I agree, but for a different reason...

Bernie won't do well any place that isn't, at least, semi-dark blue...Trump will get all of the purple...
