While I do not support his concept of 'The Wall', the illegal immigration has to be addressed in some manner with physical obstacles. Pungee traps may accidently harm the fauna, so what do you recommend as resolution to the issue?

Physical barriers do not prevent people from entering the United States and becoming illegal immigrants. As Gen George Patton said, "Fixed fortifications (e.g. walls) are monuments to the stupidity of man."
In addressing illegal immigration we also need to address legal immigration that the Trump administration is fundamentally refusing to allow related to asylum for refugees. He refuses to allow refugees to apply for asylum, that they have the legal right to do under the Refugee Act of 1980 (since amended slightly), by "metering" (a political term used in place of stonewalling) the application process and by incarcerating those that apply for asylum once inside the United States.
Trump has created a backlog of over 5,000 refugees along the Mexican border virtually all of which should have already been allowed to apply for asylum and enter the United States lawfully. Some have already been there for months and because of the Trump administrations refusal to allow them to apply for asylum, as the law specifies, the wait time is now stretching into years before they're allowed to lawfully enter the United States.
Today's illegal border crossing are overwhelmingly because these refugees are not being allowed to apply for asylum and enter the United States lawfully. The only way they can apply is to enter the US unlawfully and apply. Once they apply they become lawfully in the United States and the fact they unlawfully entered become a moot point.
By the way, in the last few years the majority of "illegal immigrants" (undocumented aliens) did not enter the US illegally. They entered with temporary visas and simply stayed after their visa expired.
