Wife Sues Husband for Share of Lotto Winnings Kept Secret

After discovering her husband hid his lottery winnings from her, a Florida woman demanded he fork over her share of the lottery jackpot.

Donna Campbell became suspicious of her husband, Arnim Ramdass, when he started to keep the television turned off and disconnected the phone line. Her suspicions rose when she found a postcard about a new home purchase.

But Campbell was unaware that her husband was hiding a $10.2 million secret from her until she Googled her husband's name and lottery number. She found a Florida lottery press release that named 17 airline mechanics who won the jackpot, her husband was one of them.

''Here's a guy who for years has spent marital money on the lottery and at casinos, and he's always lost,'' said Bruce Baldwin, Campbell's attorney. ``And now he finally wins, and he's trying to keep it from his wife. That's pretty low.''

According to Campbell, when she confronted her husband, he said he bought the ticket for his daughter from another marriage.

Is Florida a community property state? Because if it is, he's screwed.

Actually, if he provided false financial records to the court during divorce and settlement proceedings, he's screwed in EVERY state.

In fincial situations, all monies earned by either party is 'community property' irregardless of what state they are in.

If him and her were married at the time he won, then half of it is hers to use too. And by trying to hide it from her, he can actually lose more by being penalized for doing so. And he can't treat the ticket like a car or home, by saying it's in someone else's name, cause the ticket that won was community property of the employees, not his 'daughter from a previous marriage'.

Pretty much, he's up a creek without a paddle with this one. And the way the courts (and the public will see it, cause of the media), he won the lottery and was planning on cutting his ties and starting off a new life minus the wife...Hoping she'd be none the wiser of his boon.

He's not going to get much sympathy, but she will. LOL!

Oh, and half that house he bought is hers too...Hope he didn't buy furnishing for it cause he'll have to either hand half that over or make the financial reimbursement to her if he wants to keep all of what he bought with that lottery money.

Well, it's true that all of his 'earnings' are up for being divided, but in many states gambling income is not considered earnings under the law. It's as if the money had be gifted to him. He has to pay income taxes on it of course, but it technically isn't 'earnings'. This is why there are separate areas for earnings (what you work for) and income (what you get).
