Okay so many fought the idea of a 'carbon tax'

Might this become the next idea to come under fire? What is you're take on this?

Meat tax might be needed to save the world - study

Dan Satherley 1 day ago.

Western countries like New Zealand need to cut their beef and pork consumption by 90 percent if humanity is to survive the next century, according to scientists.

And they say a meat tax might be the best way to achieve it.

According to a new study, by 2050 the environmental costs of present-day food production will almost double, as the Earth's population rockets to 10 billion and more of the world is lifted out of poverty and switch to meat-rich diets.
"It is pretty shocking," study leader Marco Springmann of the University of Oxford told The Guardian. "We are really risking the sustainability of the whole system. If we are interested in people being able to farm and eat, then we better not do that."

The study, published in journal Nature, says "in the absence of technological changes and dedicated mitigation measures", pollution and resource depletion will reach "levels that are beyond the planetary boundaries that define a safe operating space for humanity".

I agree that is the best way to address the problem.

It appears to me that voluntary conception control would work better than Chinese birth control, if anybody gets the picture. Also, I smell a Gorean fart in this so-called "meat tax". Gorean, as in Al Gore.

True. What the world needs to solve the problem is a kid tax. Instead the world does the reverse. The food, water, air, resources are relatively finite. Change corn into meat, then tax the meat, solves nothing. But for some reason the right to bear and keep children seems unassailable.

The governments could push it if they wanted to. promote the idea until it takes hold as a social concept- or at the very least a fad-that having fewer kids is smart, healthy, chic, whatever.
I wonder what their reasons are for not...

Social pressure in the US has driven down the birthrate to near replacement levels. That includes immigrants from formerly high birth rate countries.

Western Europe is below replacement rate for native born peoples. They have resorted to importing Muslims with terrible consequences.

Thanks for that info

Still close to overkill for a healthy environment. But if we all learn (and we are learning ) to recycle and conserve and teach our kids to... maybe it'll be ok

The water is a problem though. Don't want to depend on imports or manufacturers for that. I know some places people do already but not here yet.

I forget, when did any government ass holes ever grant that right to people? So let's tax any couple having children? How about taxing farts, every poop we take, burps, every bit of carbon dio--never mind. Some d**kh**ds are having fantasies over that one still.

I remember 40 years ago or so when the book the "Population Bomb" was all the rage. It foretold awful famines that would kill more than a 100K per year in the US thanks to overpopulation.
