Tennessee mom allegedly left baby in hot vehicle to have 'one drink' on National Tequila Day, authorities

A Memphis, Tennessee mom has been accused of leaving her baby in a hot car while she went inside a restaurant to take part in National Tequila Day festivities on Tuesday, authorities said.

The mother, later identified as 26-year-old Rachel Vanwagner, allegedly went inside Cazadores Mexican Grill in Arlington while her baby remained in the car in the restaurant's parking lot.

Authorities were called after people in the lot heard the baby crying, NBC12 reported.

When Shelby County sheriff’s deputies arrived, they reportedly found the baby in the backseat of the car, which was not on. The windows were slightly rolled down and the car’s doors were unlocked.

Temperatures around 7 p.m. that day, when the incident occured, were nearly 95 degrees, NBC12 reported, though the temperature inside the car was likely hotter.

The baby was removed from the car and examined by first responders, the news station reported. Around that same time, Vanwagner reportedly ran out of the restaurant without any shoes, telling deputies she had been in the restaurant for roughly 30 minutes to “have one drink,” according to the news station.

Vanwagner was arrested and later charged with child abuse and neglect, NBC12 reported.

The child is now staying with relatives, according to WREG, which added that the state's Department of Child Services has been notified.

thank God there is such a thing as cps. I know of a case from many decades ago where a kind hearted person scooped a baby up and took it to a friend. it was a warm night and there were swarms of mosquitoes...
at that time there was no set procedure for dealing with something like this.
but we have evolved a bit.

CPS everywhere can kiss my ass. There are other ways to place a baby with good people without involving those ass holes.

that may be true, but used to you wouldn't call the police cause they would tell you talk to a judge. Very hard to get a baby away from natural parents back then unless it was at or near death. at least cps has authority to remove the kid.

Hard to take a child from it's natural parents is not necessarily a bad thing.

I've seen, and experienced within my family, the results of the effing idiots who can run CPS. Once a kid figures out that if they threaten their parents with reporting them for supposed 'abuse', they have full control over their parents.

Now ain't that a wonderful thing.

Family separation I tell you. Call the ACLU to file a Federal lawsuit.

If setting out across Mexico and then the SW desert in summer with the young ones in tow doesn't constitute sufficient child endangerment to justify removing the child from the parents custody, why does leaving the child unattended warrant arrest and separation?

Oh wait, so-called migrants are automatically assumed to be virtuous perfect for exploitation as human shields for open borders policies.

But what about the child ripped from mom's arms by law enforcement as part of a zero tolerance policy? No worry about the permanent trauma wrought by heartless officials? My goodness what a lack of compassion.

As we saw when the truth was revealed about the 2 year old Nicaraguan girl crying on the front page of Time magazine, today's so-called journalism allows creative storytelling as long as it stokes the Resistance hate. As citizen journalists we are obligated to report as fact the brutalization of the young mother and child by the authorities. No doubt she was fleeing an abusive home environment or some other terrible situation not her fault.

When my oldest daughter was about 10 or 12, she pulled this on my wife and I. She threatened to call the authorities because we were making her clean her room or something to that effect. I responded by handing her the phone, telling her to call 911 to report the abuse. And when she did to request an ambulance because she would most likely require a trip to the hospital. If I was going to jail, I was going to make it worth it.

Needless to say, she never made the call.

You were fortunate. Some kids would have made the call.... and even though things would have worked out in the end, the mess, the humiliation, the aggravation of having to deal with something as such is too much for some people.
