Default President Trump threatens to hit Turkey with sanctions if it doesn’t release Christia

Interested in what conservatives think 'bout this. I say conservatives because we all know how libs will react. If Trump sneezes they scream for his impeachment. So I'm really only interested in the views of conservatives.

Personally I like it. It's way past time we, as a nation, stop letting countries shove us around and do what they want with our citizens.

Discuss.

Libs, you all can obviously toss your 2 pennies into the ring too. I didn't mean you can't post. We just already know what you're gonna say.

President Trump threatens to hit Turkey with sanctions if it doesn’t release Christian pastor

President Donald Trump tweeted on Thursday that the United States would “impose large sanctions” against Turkey for its imprisonment of Christian pastor Andrew Brunson. Vice President Mike Pence made a similar announcement at a religious freedom event earlier in the day.

Wait…who is this pastor and what did he do?

Brunson, 50, is a Presbyterian pastor who preached in a Turkish church for 23 years. After a failed coup in 2016, President Recep Tayyip Erdogan of Turkey began rounding up and imprisoning people he saw as being involved in that takeover attempt.

Brunson was arrested during this time on what his supporters say are fabricated charges. The Turkish government accused him of not only being involved in the coup, but of colluding with Kurdish militants. He would spend the next two years in prison.

While the Kurds have proven themselves to be invaluable allies to the United States in the fight against the Islamic State in Syria and Iraq, the U.S. considers the PKK, a Kurdish independence movement inside Turkey, as a terrorist organization for its violent tactics.

The Turkish government, however, does not make a distinction between the PKK and other Kurdish groups, and views the entire ethnicity as a terrorist outfit.

On Wednesday, Brunson was released from prison and is now being held under house arrest. The Turkish government has not dropped the charges, and he still faces the possibility of spending up to 35 years in prison.

What did Trump and Pence say?
Trump tweeted that Turkey would face “large” sanctions for its treatment of Brunson, whom he described as “a great Christian, family man and wonderful human being.”

At a State Department-hosted religious freedom event, Pence declared:

To President Erdogan and the Turkish government, I have a message on behalf of the president of the United States of America: release Pastor Andrew Brunson now or be prepared to face the consequences

I think if you willingly go to one these countries that hostile to Americans, converts /former Muslims and Christians and you are not on government business then you should be on your own. Our government in order to encourage Americans to stay the **** away from those countries should not bail those people out. For example I would never go to North Korea because I know for a fact North Korea has a history of taking people hostage, filing bogus charges against people and treating people like ****. So I don't feel sorry for any American who goes to North Korea and gets captured. In an ideal world no American would be treated like **** when a country lets them into their borders and would bomb the living snot out of them should harm come to one of our citizens. But we don't live in an ideal world and wars not only with that country, but their allies can happen as a result of bombing the snot out of every country who harms our citizens.

James, I think there are faith based people that receive a 'calling' for 'above'
and they answer the call. Because I think that, I can't be in favor of what you're saying but I do understand what you're saying.

I don't care why they entered those countries. They know going into those countries is dangerous. Willingly going into a country that is hostile to Americans, Christians, and converts/former Muslims is stupid. We should be discouraging Americans from going to those countries by not trying to bail them when their asses get brought up on bogus charges or for **** that isn't a crime here.

Apparently this dude taught for over 20 years. After a failed coup, the president rounded up peeps he thought were involved. For some reason this teacher was one of 'em.

Yes, this specific issue is a little different than going to North Korea. Turkey was not really hostile to Americans until Edrogan began to consolidate power and drive the country more towards an Islamic theocracy.

Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaand here come the sanctions.

One thing I love 'bout Trump is he doesn't take crap from anyone. If someone fuqs with us he fuqs back. He doesn't give a crap 'bout political correctness or how the msm relentlessly attacks him. And that's one of the many reasons so many peeps love Trump and why he became president. Voters are sick and tired of the same-old-same-old politically correct nonsense. Americans want their president to tell it like it is and do the right thing.

US announces sanctions on Turkish officials after refusal to release imprisoned Christian pastor

The United States will slap sanctions on two high-ranking Turkish officials after that nation refused to release a Christian pastor who has been imprisoned since 2016, CNN reported.

What are the details?

Pastor Andrew Brunson, a North Carolina native who was pastor of a Presbyterian church in Turkey, was arrested in 2016. He was charged with being involved in a failed coup that year and with colluding with Kurdish militants.

While Kurdish forces have been close allies to U.S. forces fighting the Islamic State in Syria and Iraq, the U.S. considers the Turkish Kurdish group known as the PKK to be a terrorist organization. Turkey, however, does not see any difference between separate Kurdish groups, and views all ethnic Kurds as being allied with the PKK.

Brunson’s supporters maintain that the charges against him were fabricated.

On July 25, Brunson was moved from prison and placed under house arrest.

On July 26, Trump announced in a tweet that if the Turkish government did not release Brunson, the U.S. would impose “large” sanctions on Turkey.

What happened next?

Turkey, however, refused to comply. The Trump administration followed through on its threat and hit Turkish Minister of Justice Abdulhamit Gul and Minister of Interior Suleyman Soylu with sanctions for being leaders “of an entity that has engaged in, or whose members have engaged in, serious human rights abuse.”

The two ministers will have any assets and properties under U.S. jurisdiction blocked and U.S. persons will be prohibited from engaging in financial transactions with the ministers, CNN reported.

In the news release announcing the sanctions, Treasury Secretary Steve Mnuchin called Brunson’s detention “unjust” and “simply unacceptable.”

He added, “President Trump has made it abundantly clear that the United States expects Turkey to release him immediately.”

In a news conference on Wednesday, White House press secretary Sarah Sanders stressed that the administration found Brunson’s imprisonment to be “unfair and unjust” and that it saw “no evidence that Pastor Brunson has done anything wrong.”
