Part of how Republicans raise the deficit is by lowering the government income (i.e. taxes) while raising the defense spending. 
In the modern world, when a household spends too much they have to look at either:
a) raising what money they bring in, and/or
b) lowering how much they spend.
For Republicans, they push for policies that screw over the household budget and pretend it's all good...

Ok, so now you are moving the goal posts.
Raising taxes will NOT decrease the deficit as both parties will look to spend any perceived new revenue that they may be promised. If reducing the deficit is the goal, then there needs to be a serious look at spending by both parties.
For this I do blame Republicans as they have for years, campaigned on the promise to reduce spending, but as soon as they have both houses of Congress and the Presidency, they once again fail to act.
Until the Government can reign in spending and learn to live within the constraints of revenue, deficits will continue to spiral out of control.
