Trump signs 'Right to Try Act' aimed at
helping terminally ill patients seek drug treatments

Quote:
President Donald Trump signed the "Right to Try Act" Wednesday, a measure aimed at helping terminally ill patients access drug treatments that are yet to be fully approved by the Food and Drug Administration.

Trump, at a White House ceremony surrounded by patients and families who will be affected by the legislation, said his administration "worked hard on this" but said repeatedly he didn't understand why it hadn't been done before.
The bill will give terminally ill patients the right to seek drug treatments that remain in clinical trials and "have passed Phase 1 of the Food and Drug Administration's approval process" but have not been fully approved by the FDA. Some opponents of the bill argue that the legislation won't change much but could have a detrimental effect on how the FDA safeguards public health.

This seems like a good move (although I haven't heard evidence regarding the counter-argument).

On the flip side, I question how much it will actually help. Insurance companies will likely not cover a drug not passed by the FDA willingly.
But the option should be available if the drug has passed some level of the FDA's approval process.
The data could be useful!

Good move. Also, many of these drugs may be provided at no or reduced costs if the people receiving them agree to provide data.

I'm guessing you right on that point.
On the other flip side, sometimes clinical trials for unproven medicine are free to the patients willing to be the proverbial guinea pig.

I like this, and I'm glad Trump signed this into law. Although I'm concerned about liability issues, hopefully it will help at least a few people out of seemingly hopeless situations.

Corny I know lol.

FINAL VOTE RESULTS FOR ROLL CALL 214

Votes AYES NOES
REPUBLICAN 228 0
DEMOCRATIC 22 169
TOTALS 250 169

The only explanation I can come up with is that so many Democrats want to be anti-Trump more than pro-anything...

Your statement was a lot more polite than what I was thinking.

I would have to guess that in addition to doing anything and everything to be anti-Trump, it may also be the idea that by letting people move outside the medical box, the industry may actually provide real help or a cure for the population.

How detrimental would that be for a government run healthcare system?

Oddly enough, the Republicans get accused of being "obstructionist" by most of the media.
HuffingtonPost dutifully blasted their liberal anti President Trump/conservative congress opinion about this. https://www.huffingtonpost.com/entry...b0fdb2aa58c732
