I'll never understand why blacks insist on playing the victim-hood card. All it does is take away from real incidents of racism.

Police release bodycam footage showing another side to their confrontation with black Airbnb guests

Police have released bodycam footage from a confrontation with black filmmakers, showing a very different side to a story that has gone viral on social media.

What happened?

On April 30, police showed up to question Bob Marley’s granddaughter, Donisha Prendergast, and three other filmmakers who were staying at an Airbnb in Rialto, California.

The police had been called by a neighbor who later said that she had no idea that the residence was being rented out as an Airbnb.

The police prevented the group from leaving until they could confirm that the owner of the house had allowed them to stay there.

What did the original video show?

Prendergast posted two videos from the encouter on Instagram with the caption:

Be Love. So much things to say right now…. Got surrounded by the police for being black in a white neighbourhood. Smh. I’m sad and irritated to see that fear is still the first place police officers go in their pursuit to serve and protect, to the point that protocol supersedes their ability to have discernment. Many have suffered and died in moments like these. That’s a crazy reality check. Give Thanks for life, and the ability to stand our ground. We are stronger together. Use your voice collectively.

In another video of the incident, one of the women can be heard saying “it’s a code black,” suggesting that race was the only reason behind the police presence.

Prendergast’s attorney has suggested that they might be seeking legal action against the city.

What did the new bodycam footage show?

Rialto police released bodycam footage of the incident, which they said proves that the police acted responsibly. In the footage, Pendergast and the three other Airbnb guests are seen moving around and even joking with the police officers.

The police also insisted that race did not play a factor in the incident.

The neighbor who called the police said that the race of the four people did not influence her phone call either. Instead, she said, she was alarmed when she saw people she did not recognize carrying luggage out of her neighbor’s house, especially since there has been a recent rise in crime in the neighborhood.

“At no time during the encounter did our officers use any form of force,” interim Rialto Police Chief Mark Kling said during a news briefing.

Kling also said that social media can be “a real challenge” for police departments.

“It’s because of the inaccurate information that just is like lighting a wildfire,” he said.

Residents who saw the bodycam footage seemed to agree.

“I think that this video really showed the fact that people are too quick to rush to judgment not getting all the facts in first,” Rialto resident Harry Bratton told KCAL-TV, the local CBS affiliate.

It's sad that so frequently, blacks.,Latinos and Muslims use the race card ruse as a subterfuge to escape honest prosecution when they commit crimes. sadder still when a responsible citizen acts on a see something say something, and is mendaciously race baited.

The police cannot ever win in this situation. And frankly society always loses to these losers. Color should never matter. Not to the police, the neighbors who called them, or the so-called "victims." When it does, we all lose.

I work at home and as such, I am able to see when people pull into my neighbors driveways. I live in the country and have 2 neighbors that I can see from my home office. I know my neighbors and most of their friends and families.

They both work out of the home during the day, so there should not be many instances of people pulling into their driveway's during working hours. However I have seen people that I was not familiar with pull into their driveways during the day. In these cases, I have called my neighbors on their cell phones and asked if they knew someone in a vehicle (giving them the description). And in every case they tell me, yes that is so and so coming to pickup or drop something off.

If I didn't know the neighbors as well, or could not reach them on the phone, I would grab the handgun I keep in my desk and drive over to their house and confront the individual to determine what they were doing. (I have done this in the past.) The trick is to not confront them in an confrontational way, but to just introduce yourself and say why you are there. If they are there for a proper reason, they will tell you. If they are there for the wrong reason, they will become confrontational at which point I would leave and let the authorities know via a phone call.

The point is that it is proper to look after one's neighbor and for them to do the same. It is also helpful if neighbors get to know one another well enough to be able to make determinations as to when there is something wrong versus when what is going on is ok. In this case, the people renting out their home would have been well served to inform their neighbors that they were doing this and to expect unknown people to be in and around their house.

The neighbor that called the police and the police did the right thing, but it could have been avoided with a little communication between the neighbors.

Agreed. Six houses east of my home, a sign went up on the lawn from a local realtor. Two days later a moving van came and removed everything from the house. When the owners got home a week later from vacation, they found an empty house.
They were mad at the police, the neighbors, even the HOA. But in reality, they had never interacted with any of their neighbors when they lived there. No one knew they were on vacation.

We are all so busy with work, our cellphones and Facebook it is not uncommon for neighbors to not even know each other's names. Sad.

Exactly. I think a lot of the problems we have in this country and in our communities, could be alleviated by simply getting to know one's neighbors. People would be surprised by how much they may have in common with the guy living right next door.

Having moved around a bit in my younger years, I made a point of at least having a passing acquaintance with my neighbors. When I moved to where I am now, we've been here for 18+ years now, our closest neighbors are a couple of acres away.

The neighbors took about three years of observing us (their words) to make sure we weren't pot growers (the previous people were!), another 10 years of understanding that being neighbors means we will yank you out of the cow's mud ditch if you get stuck, and don't accept payment for it, but we might ask you to feed the cats when we go for a weekend trip.

We had a heck of a time with them when he got medi-vacced with a ruptured and bleeding internal something-or-other, and she couldn't get the hay bales down from the barn loft, so we did it for about two months. They attempted payment, gift cards, presents, and a million thank yous. We simply said - that's what neighbors do.

I live in a similar situation. About 4 houses within about 20 acres, surrounded by a couple of thousand acres of corn/beans/wheat fields. We keep track of each other and watch each others back.

Just a couple of days ago, I was mowing the back yard when one of my neighbors emerged from the rear walk-in door of my garage. So I stopped to talk. He had just come over to fill up a couple of bicycle tires for his kids using my air compressor.

He knew he didn't need to ask, just come help himself. But out of courtesy and seeing me in the back, he came back just to tell me what he was doing.

In the winter, I plow my drive and anyone else that needs it. My neighbor has a backhoe and will allow me to use it if I need it. We do all of this with just a thank you back and forth.

Much of the media has been pushing this as a "race" issue.
I swear, it seems like the media is trying to create a race war.

Obama spent 8 years trying to incite a race war, the media is just trying to carry the torch for him.
