16 Years of War: Trump Joins Obama & Bush in Using SOTU to Hail “Progress” in Afghan War
On Tuesday night, President Trump became the third president in a row to attempt to put a positive spin on the war in Afghanistan—the longest war in U.S. history. Five years earlier, President Barack Obama predicted at his 2013 State of the Union that the war would soon be over. And back in 2006, President George W. Bush used his State of the Union to praise Afghanistan for building a “new democracy.” More than 16 years after the U.S. War in Afghanistan began, the country remains in a state of crisis. On Saturday, more than 100 people died in Kabul when an ambulance packed with explosives blew up. Then, on Monday, Islamic State militants carried out an early-morning attack on a military academy in the western outskirts of the capital of Kabul, killing at least 11 troops and wounding 16. We speak to investigative reporter May Jeong in Kabul. Her most recent piece for The Intercept is titled “Losing Sight: A 4-Year-Old Girl Was the Sole Survivor of a U.S. Drone Strike in Afghanistan. Then She Disappeared.”

President Barack Obama is the only 2 term US president to have our nation in war for his entire presidency.
President Barack Obama was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize "for his extraordinary efforts to strengthen international diplomacy and cooperation between peoples".

Maybe President Trump will get our country out of Afghanistan, no Nobel Peace Prize needed.

Nobel peace prize Obama killed more people by drone strikes ...including civilians... than Bush did too.
I hope Trump leaves Afghanistan But I doubt he will. It's part of the ANTI-Russia package that NATO and the Neo cons and Neo Libs have been on about since... well forever.
they've got his ear and he's to ... uhh.. uninformed and pridful to think for himself on this and leave without a "victory" like Russia did.
well like every empire that's fought Afghanistan really.

I think DJT would love to withdrawal our troops from Afghanistan asap and have a big parade but he's stuck there just like his 2 predecessors. He listens to Mad Dog who impresses as a pragmatist. The dropping of that JDAM last year may have been a signal to the Taliban and to Americans there was some change in priorities. Also, we hear very little about what's going on in Libya these days except that there are reports that slave markets have appeared.

from what i read
Libya's turned to crap ... as planned IMO.
Qaddafi was a dictator but he had the nation free of foreign debt and moving in a very modern direction on many fronts and was actually leading other African nations on the same track.
Now there's a central bank and western "investment" with Alqeda in ruling seats of power.

another destabilized country to exploit.

It's ironic that a major legacy of BHO and HRC was Libya and the shining example of what not to do.
I don't see any great Afghanistan exit strategies that will prevent the return of the Taliban and other cooperating Islamist groups returning to power. I hope I'm wrong but I'm not optimistic.

We are committed now. May as well consider Afghanistan a permanent US colony. There is a large Afghan population that wants to join the modern world. Good Afghan people have died fighting to free themselves from Taliban extremists. We cannot abandon them without betraying the word that we have given them. And that's not all, we have deep national security interests in the region. Primarily Pakistan, who in name is an ally, buuuut not really. The Talib an would be destroyed already if not for Pakistan. But they have nukes, so we can't do anything worthwhile about it.

This is maybe the only thing I agree with this presidency on. And it's not tRUmps strategy, he doesn't have a clue what's going on in Afghanistan or anywhere else. This is all Mattis. Hes killed more civilians in his first year than Obama did with drones in 8. But he's pretty much ended ISIS. And I know that sounds cold. But there is no easy way to murder people who hide behind women and children, using our aversion to collateral damage against us.

We've tried the other way and It hasn't worked. Let Mad Dog have a shot at it.

Sherman raped and pillaged his way to Atlanta, then he burned the place down. But he helped end the Civil War. At some point you've exhausted all other options and the only thing you have left is to take the gloves off and and kill every last ****ing one of them.
