The effect that California’s $15 minimum wage will have was just revealed ? and it’s devastating – TheBlaze

California’s plan to raise its state-wide minimum wage to $15 per hour will have devastating effects on the Golden State, according to a new study.

A new study from the Employment Policies Institute found that a $15 minimum wage in California could trigger the loss of more than 400,000 private-sector jobs, decimating California’s workforce. Even that estimate, the study warned, is “conservative.”

Which job markets will be hit hardest? The study was unequivocal about that. “The job loss is not spread evenly. Slightly more than one-half of the job loss is projected to be in two industries: accommodation and food services, and retail trade,” the study found.

In addition, it was discovered that for every 10 percent the state increased the minimum wage, employment dropped by two percent, while low-income earners were hit the hardest.

California Gov. Jerry Brown (D) last year signed a bill into law mandating the raise of the state’s minimum wage to $15 across the board by 2023.

The law bumped the state’s minimum wage of $10 to $10.50 this year and will bump it to $11 in 2018. After that, the minimum wage will increase by $1 each year until it reaches the full $15 by 2022. Businesses than employee 25 or less people will be given one extra year to comply.

After the $15 minimum is set, it will continue to rise with inflation.

The loss of jobs didn’t go unpredicted. Economists stated last year when the bill was signed into law that it could cost 5 to 10 percent of low-income, low-skilled workers their jobs.

I would be rehashing the same statements I've made since all this noise started.

There is a cost for increases like these. And for minimum wage workers, it could be fatal.

I'm beginning to think that job loss is by design of the Democratic party. While I know that some of the lesser educated crowd that votes Democrat does not understand the correlation between the rise in minimum wage and low wage job loss, those in office generally do know this. So the only conclusion that I can come to is that they either don't mind the loss of those jobs in exchange for votes, or they want to create an even larger dependent class or both.

Even with all these cons I might be persuaded to support a minimum wage increase if it helped the people was intended to help. But it won't.

Yes, they will have more money but they won't have more buying power. Their buying will receive a temporary boost before dropping below what it was previously at. It seems counter intuitive but an increase in minimum wage will push more people into poverty.

That is always the effect of a hike in minimum wage. But too many people are oblivious to it until it hits them. Even then, they try to blame businesses for raising their prices to cover their labor cost increase.

I was thinking the same thing. It seems that a strong economy, and low unemployment, are both bad for democrats.

They are going to be in dire straights the way things are going. They will have to pull out all the stops to reverse it.

Didn't Obama say that we need to get used to a lack luster, low growth economy? That was his progressive fundamental change I think.

You guys are hilarious.

KANSAS'S ECONOMIC SITUATION TANKED after employing the wet dream for tax cuts.
And you guys habitually avoid acknowledging it. You don't want to talk about it.
But it DID HAPPEN.

This article is talking about an article created by: Employment Policies Institute
The Employment Policies Institute is a fiscally conservative non-profit American think tank that conducts research on employment issues such as minimum wage and health care.
And it is amazing how the article claims to PREDICT what could happen ...
(note: NO actual demonstration of their predictions being true yet)
... but right-wing posters on this forum think we are in "I told you so" territory...

Unbe-freakin-lievable!

The higher minimum wage rises, the more lower wage jobs will be replaced by technology. AKA robots.
Technology has always replaced unskilled/uneducated labor for as long as society has existed.
Stupid people demand higher wages for remaining stupid as the rest of the world passes by.
